This model of the mobile phone SX1 was build in Rhinocerous 3 out of NURBS Curves. The lighting was done in 3dsmax6. It was rendered with mental ray (5197x3898px). Finishing was done in Photoshop. Critics are welcome!

Ooh great job. You really need to model a cell phone to appreciate how difficult they are to model. You did a phenominal job. I can't find anything wrong with it. I wish I knew nurbs as well as you.

Awesome work André, great lighting, materials and attention to detail.
This particular camera angle is a bit unusual but ok, I liked the other views of it on you website as well.

It's good you've posted the final (and bigger) render, 'couse I thought there was a little error just beneath "siemens", but aperantly thats just a "fake" shadow of the word :)

how'd you do the metel mesh in the earpiece? Is that a texture, or did you model it?

The metal mesh is an selfmade photoshop texture. It was not nessassary to model this tiny structure, cause there was no closeup planned. In this pictures are no "fake" shadows at all. i always try to avoid faking. The shadow of "siemens" is really caused by the main area light.
The modeling and the lighting were the most difficult parts of this image. 5500 px output does not forgive any (even tiny) illogically things.
@Vladimir: http://jeffpatton.net/Mental-ray.htm is the most helpful site about mental ray. I use mental ray now for 1 1/2 year, and i have to say that i understood maybe 70 percent of it. (and i worked with it day by day...) Here in an forum is a big helpful thread, too (search for "mental ray shader discussion"...)
The best way to get into it is to read the (not easy) manual of it and make rendertest over and over again. Gradually you will understand more and more of the extensively options of mental ray. Never forget: Its worth it!!

Hello
two things:
first
there is smthing strange with simens - it looks like its liitlebit over the phone and puts shadow on it, and dont know what is it but it look very strange.
second
i think there is still smth wrong with the surfece on the right side of the word simens just under it. It is quite big and smoth, but i think its not good
Great datailing

the thing is: the whole part over the display is completely glass. the siemens logo is branded into it´s outer surface. the letters got a tiny depth, so that you can feel it if you touch it. this logo, branded into the outer surface of the glass layer, does cast a shadow trough the glass (about 3 mm) recieved by the base of the display.
