This week we will go into the movie biz.
Imagine you have been contracted to work on REMAKES of a classic SCIFI TV show or movie.
“War of the Worlds”
"
An early science fiction (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Science_fiction) novel, The War of the Worlds (1898 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1898)), by H.G. Wells (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H.G._Wells), describes the fictional (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiction) turn of the twentieth century (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/20th_century) invasion of Earth by aliens (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alien), from Mars (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mars_%28planet%29), who use laser (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laser)/maser (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maser)-like Heat-Rays, chemical weapons (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chemical_weapon) (the Black Smoke), and mechanical three-legged "fighting machines" that could potentially be viewed as precursors to the tank (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tank). After defeating the resistance the Martians devastate much of eastern England, including London (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London), before being unexpectedly killed by terrestrial diseases, to which they have no immunity.
The book has been viewed as an indictment of European (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Europe) colonial (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colonialism) actions in Africa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Africa), Asia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asia), Australasia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australasia), and the Americas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Americas). Justification of the conquest of non-European peoples was usually along the lines of might-makes-right; i.e., the Europeans had vastly superior technology and so must be naturally superior people and so are perfectly justified in taking the lands for themselves. This argument gets flipped on its head with the arrival of comparatively technologically superior Martians who, according to the colonizers' own arguments, must therefore have every right to subjugate Europeans.
Wells seems to have taken great pleasure in the fictional (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiction) devastation of locations where he had spent an unhappy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Happiness) childhood (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Children). The book has been adapted as a famous (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_War_of_the_Worlds_%28radio%29) radio drama (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radio_drama), as a movie (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Film), and as a bestselling concept album (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concept_album), all of which have played some part in maintaining the public's interest in the original novel.
