This week we will go into the movie biz.
Imagine you have been contracted to work on REMAKES of a classic SCIFI TV show or movie.

“War of the Worlds”
"
An early science fiction (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Science_fiction) novel, The War of the Worlds (1898 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1898)), by H.G. Wells (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H.G._Wells), describes the fictional (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiction) turn of the twentieth century (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/20th_century) invasion of Earth by aliens (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alien), from Mars (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mars_%28planet%29), who use laser (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laser)/maser (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maser)-like Heat-Rays, chemical weapons (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chemical_weapon) (the Black Smoke), and mechanical three-legged "fighting machines" that could potentially be viewed as precursors to the tank (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tank). After defeating the resistance the Martians devastate much of eastern England, including London (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London), before being unexpectedly killed by terrestrial diseases, to which they have no immunity.

The book has been viewed as an indictment of European (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Europe) colonial (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colonialism) actions in Africa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Africa), Asia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asia), Australasia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australasia), and the Americas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Americas). Justification of the conquest of non-European peoples was usually along the lines of might-makes-right; i.e., the Europeans had vastly superior technology and so must be naturally superior people and so are perfectly justified in taking the lands for themselves. This argument gets flipped on its head with the arrival of comparatively technologically superior Martians who, according to the colonizers' own arguments, must therefore have every right to subjugate Europeans.

Wells seems to have taken great pleasure in the fictional (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiction) devastation of locations where he had spent an unhappy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Happiness) childhood (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Children). The book has been adapted as a famous (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_War_of_the_Worlds_%28radio%29) radio drama (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radio_drama), as a movie (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Film), and as a bestselling concept album (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concept_album), all of which have played some part in maintaining the public's interest in the original novel.

Just saw the movie, so this is bound to be influenced by it. Anyway, I tried to give this version of the tripod a more organic look. I think they were a bit too mechanical in the movie.

Nice one vahn. Try a brush with the color of the sky, and set it at a low opacity (around 10%) and brush over the most right tripod. This will increase the sense of depth in the picture. You could do the same, but in a lesser amount to the one on the left.

Boss was out of the office for the holiday and it is so quiet I managed to sneak 45 minutes to torture you all. :) I have my copy of Moho and did the walker in about 10-15minutes -just the outline. They just added an export to psd option that saves the layers so I was able to open this in a copy of Paint Shop Pro 8 we have here. I just quickly did a background, pasted the layers on top and painted, burned and dodged the thing a bit. Not great but first time I've submitted in about a year. :)

EDIT: Argghhh... the gamma at home and at work must be radically different as now I see all that blurry gray stuff that looked like lighting at work looks like I spilled paint at home. I guessing most of you see the spilled paint look - Murphy's law....

well I was somewhat inspired as I was loooking through some of the old DSG pics I had saved and was remembering how much fun it was, soooo here is my entry..

took about 2 hours alllll with my mouse.. in PS.. damn using the mouse slows things down ALOT! I need to get a wacom.. haha.

Anyways, not really good but I learnt a few things while doing it so that works :)

EDIT: btw I dont know if im going against the rules with this pic... everyone else seems to be doing on the surface pics.. sooo.. sorry if I am..

also I was going to put alien ships in orbit and what not but my hand hurts alot.. and ya..

Here's one more. About one hour in Paint Shop Pro 9. I wanted to try a quick look at the ship delivering the aliens to the buried vehicles. The scale of the ship is way off I guess seeing as it is as wide as the whole planet ...

-The War of The Worlds between the world of film, and the world of media. I don't know if I heard more about Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes than I did about the movie. So here's my take.

Spent longer on this than I'd planned. About 4.5 hrs. Photoshop CS w/ Wacom.

Haven't seen any of the movies or read any books on WOTW, but I'm hoping to see the new movie soon. Not sure how long I worked on this though since I've been working on my paintings on and off throughout the day. Photoshop.

Hey, this is my first daily sketch. I've only been drawing and painting for about 6 months total, but in that time I've gone from a 3 year old drawing ability to what you see now, so I'm pretty happy with my progress. I've still got a whole lot to learn, and I think that participating in these daily sketches will help a whole lot.

http://wharris.net/images/701s.jpg

About an hour and a half or so(I'm slow :D,) in Photoshop. I just saw the movie today, so it got me inspired to jump into the daily sketch. I spent a long time trying to fix the values, and it still seems really muddy to me. Any critiques or comments would be much appreciated, I am a sponge for knowledge in my new hobby. :)

Hey Slybones,
Here my comments:
The colors are a bit oversatureted and to bright especially the wood which looks as if it was evenly lit. Play around with the shadows and lights (fire and laserbeam should light the area around cause its quite dark outside)

Hope this helps.

here's my pic and since I didn't have time to make a city I made a lost one in the desert
I haven't seen the film or read the book so I have no idea if it's even possible for one of them to get lost in the desert :)

Thanks for the comments guys! Since I posted mine so late last night, I didn't have a chance to comment on anyone elses work. So here goes:

Vahn: Very cool style! The changes helped as well. Good job.

Lady Medusa: I think your design turned out very cool. Very organic yet mechanical. Nice!

Lord Blue: Hahaha! :D

DoInferno: So in your version, do the aliens get here intending to take us out and then realize that we're giants compared to them? Nice emphasis on the blood.

CodeNothing: That is super cool! Great perspective and feeling of action. :applause:

HerOd: Nice angle and sketchy style! The horizon is a cool addition.

Danielh68: Once again, you blow my mind with your painting skills. Great work!

Vyse_soa: Good design. I know you had to sleep but it would be nice to see some more detail work.

Bupaje: I like the second one much more than the first. Though the first had potential. (Can't monitor color matching drive you nuts) The ship in the second one is massive, but that's what make's it unique. Keep at it!

SwizzleStick: Cool style! Simplistic yet powerful. Love the tentacles.

Daw: Great lighting and machine design. Like the white lines of light in the sky.

Geta-Ve: Good mouse work! There are no rules in regards to layout, so no need to apologize. I like the various burn marks on the earth.

csgirl: Cool composition and color scheme. Powerful scene. Very nice!

SurfGod69a: Cool colors and ideas. Like the mechastyle man and the addition of stonehenge.

Thany: Wow! That is awesome. Love the perspective and design.
vbmenu_register("postmenu_2426291", true);
Slybones: I like the scene you've created. Milho makes a good point about the lighting, but keep practicing. You've got great potential.

The Vux: Hahaha! Aliens traveled 300 million light years to blow up our cactuses and melt our sand. :D

(Edit)
BrutalMonk: Sorry man! You must have posted while I was writing this book. :) I like the stylish take and color choice.

Slybones

Everyone's stuff is really cool, lots of creative work on here.

Milho: Thanks a bunch for the advice, I will work it over some more and try and get the lighting/shadows better.

The Vux: Attacking the cactus is awesome. Who knows, maybe they are age old enemies, the Martians and the cacti? :D

GrantMan: Thanks for the kind words, I'll keep practicing
