View Full Version : 45 vs 90 Constraint
donophanf 06-29-2005, 06:42 PM Is anyone aware of a way I can adjust the 'Shift' powered brush constraint? Until a few months ago, I worked exclusively in Photoshop. Now, using Painter, I find the 45 dgr constraint slowing me down. I tend to hit the 45 all the time when I am trying to hit 90. I had hoped practice would take care of the problem, but it isnt. I even laid a ruler on my tablet, and it still hit 45!
Can I somehow adjust it to only hit 90? If so, It would be useful for the other direction too, say constraint to 30 degree angles.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Hi Fran,
I seldom use the Shift key to constrain a brushstroke to 45 or 90 degrees as it's both awkward and limiting.
Instead, I click the V key to paint Straight Lines, click once at the beginning and click and hold at the end. A thin "wire" appears between the beginning and ending point and I can then drag the end point to wherever it want it, to any angle. Unfortunately, the angle has to be eyeballed since there's no way to determine it mathematically.
If you need an exact angle, you can use the Pen tool to draw a horizontal line, then use Effects > Orientation > Rotate and type the degree of rotation you want. That Shape can then be converted to a Default Layer if you want, or multiple Shapes can be Grouped and Collapsed which will convert them to a single Default Layer.
