This week we will go into the movie biz.
Imagine you have been contracted to work on REMAKES of a classic SCIFI TV show or movie.

From:
Wikipedia: Flash Gordon (http://rds.yahoo.com/S=2766679/K=flash+gordon+comics/v=2/SID=e/TID=F568_76/l=WS1/R=2/MI=free/IPC=us/SHE=0/H=2/;_ylt=AuN92Lpug4XmuMKgaCuUQ3BXNyoA/SIG=183qjaog3/EXP=1120137890/*-http%3A//rdre1.yahoo.com/click?u=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flash_Gordon&y=02411398BA53F2A6&i=482&c=11388&q=02%5ESSHPM%5BL7ys~lw%3Fxpm%7Bpq%3F%7Cprv%7Cl6&e=utf-8&r=1&d=wow~F568-en-us&n=E99K5H7MA3145LTK&s=72&t=&m=42C2A121&x=01BF32C83CAB615F)

"The comics followed the adventures of Flash Gordon, for whom the series was named, and his companions Dr. Hans Zarkov (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hans_Zarkov) and Dale Arden (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dale_Arden). The story begins with Dr. Zarkov's invention of a rocket ship, in which the three of them make a journey to the planet Mongo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mongo_%28planet%29), where they are stranded. Mongo is inhabited by a number of different cultures, some quite technologically advanced, that have been falling one by one under the domination of the vicious tyrant Ming the Merciless (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ming_the_Merciless).
The three Earthpeople are befriended shortly after their arrival by Prince Barin, rightful heir to the throne that Ming has taken. Ming banishes Prince Barin and his followers including Ming's own daughter, Aura, Barin's bride to the forest realm of Arboria, and the three join in Barin's quest to topple Ming."

Well, I guess I'll go first today... Never been much into the old Flash Gordon stuff so, similar to MichaelMotion yesterday, went with a more literal approach..

Meet Gorden...

Cool Ming, Thany. Great work.

I remember seeing Bird-Man or Bird-People in one of the old serials. Anyhow, I updated the guy to be more bird than man...and a tad more menacing.

Photoshop/2.5 hours.

ok... I was going for a older comic book style, with reduced palette and all.
Let me know if I fell on my face.

Tried to do some inking...not thrilled with the result. Oh well. Ink and photoshop, mmm, 1.5 hours I think.

That title partially in "honor" of that equally cheesy recent sci-fi series.
Flash & Ming
ps, 1hrhttp://www.heylori.com/conceptartdotorg/flas2.jpg
Since the movie I always think of Flash as a pretty boy.
And I guess I subconsciously think Tyra Banks looks like an evil, merciless alien.

Boy it's been way to long since I've had a chance to do this. I miss it. Nice work everyone.
I wish I had time to do more than just the pencil, But - oh well - maybe next time.
About 30 minutes or so.

Thany:  How do you do that? You've got some skills man...

Danielh68: Beautiful style. Love the texturing and color choices...

Csgirl: Good job! I like the "hot princess chick". Also like the little extras like the price in the corner and comic book style description...

Sleepychic: Very cool. Was that really a show? I'm not up on my sci-fi these days...

Crazy3dman: Nice pencil work and originality.

Made in Uterus: hahaha... Flash Gordon: The Later Years. :D

Nope, I was referring to Cleopatra 2525, which was on tv for a second, and was like Xena in Space.

Shudder.

Props to Thany, Daniel, Gary, and everyone! Good stuff!

Aw, nuts. My Ming the Merciless has to go up against Thany's. It's just not fair. This was about four hours worth of work spread over two days. I think that I am beginning to get the hang of this.

http://jebas.no-ip.info/%7Ejeff/art/ming.jpg There are several good ones here. I like danielh68's idea of updating the characters a bit. I was going for a Mongol look for Ming, instead of the traditional Chinese.

HOLY MONKEY TARON. I love your atmosphere. The transition from ground to dust to heavens is SWEET. The compressed air (or whatever) from the ship has a cool style to it as well. Well done.

i too was inspired by daniel68 and then Taron333, i think both your paintings are wonderfull.

Taron, you have really captured the moment there with the movement of the thrusters firing, and the composition.
