Scotcho 06-29-2005, 02:00 AM I've started my second character for my demo reel. He's going to have some faceshapes and possible some muscle deforms. I'd like to dress him up a little but not exactly sure with what, any suggestions would be nice. I'm working from my own design, hopefully it'll all make it into 3d. Crits and comments appreciated along the way. Thanks.

Great start. It kinda reminds me of one of the creatures in the movie "Evolution". =)

hey scott,
very good start, i would rework the design a bit more, its got character but the torso itself seems a little empty.
I would maybe show the spine coming up in some areas as welll as the rib cage to show this creature also has a skeletal structure that supports it , will make it far more interesting imo.
So think about the many layers that would make up this creaute if it existed, fat , sinew, muscle and bone, try to think how they would all overlap and work together study some animal reference and it will inspire you, You dont need alot of gack on him just make it a solid model.
Also dont forget to use zbrush :)

looks great so far scotcho! the only crit that i have is that his mouth skin should maybe be a little bit fatter. it looks kinda thin right now and it stands out a little with his huge weight and sagginess hanging over his knees. anywyays great work sorry if this doesnt make much sense im about to pass out im so tired... :buttrock:

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'll check out that evolution creature. I agree with you Heeb.. I'll give that body work another run through with an anatomy eye. Zbrush is a for sure on this guy, can't wait to try that program. I'll be updating tomorrow.

hey adam,
man its looking sweet...:applause: i think i would have to agree with heber maybe you should show the spine coming up in some areas as well as the rib cage it would add alot of character to this creature. also i think the jaw comes up a bit to high just below the eye, but thats just my opinion:thumbsup:
keep it coming man
this is gonna get intresting!

great start really roughing out the shape of the model... looking good dude.. the back end looks boring to me imo.. for some reason he reminds me too much of komodo dragon.. i have many lizards as pets and they would all look stupid if they didnt have a tail and i think this is the case here since your creature looks very much like a komodo.....It just seems to be unbalanced if thats the way i can put it, all this weight in the front with no balance in the back doesnt seem normal to me because all large creatures that have huge body's like this dude either dont have a tail and there legs are positioned higher to balance the weight or they have a tail... when you z brush it i think my opinion will change because you'll add some deformation to make it un boring in the skin, but then again i still think a large tail would be a little bit better then a boring end and unbalanced end.. i hope i dont sound like a fool but at least im an honest fool lol... but overall dude ur model owns... good work..

Here's another update. Its my first attempt at zbrush, and my first pass. Next pass will cover his scales, veins, and finer wrinkles and tendans.
Neeno - Thanks for the interest! I see what you mean about not having a tail. I think he may look awkward right now because he isn't rigged and balanced out, and giving him a larger tail will make him more dinosaur like which I'm trying to stay away from. I extended it a tiny bit, but I'll make sure the pose will balance him because he default isn't right now. He's very front heavy.
Gkaine - Thanks, glad you like it.

gr8 work scott, I like what u did in zbrush, wisely added details..it's good that u didn't go too far with wrinkles and details at first pass, I agree with what neeno said about his back end.. but I'll wait to see how is it gonna be after adding props and rigging it.

07-03-2005, 08:19 PM
looks awesome.. specially the legs.. but I guess the texture on his back needs some tweaking , those big circular bumps look blurry and somewhat fake, I might be wrong or maybe it's gonna look different when colored. as for the eyes, u might want to add more details to it.. here are some refs :
http://www.phototalk.net/photos/data/500/1530Lizard_Eye1.jpg
http://p.webshots.com/ProThumbs/14/4414_wallpaper280.jpg
I guess if you're still having problem finding the perfect tail it could be just hidden by props or big piece of cloth that looks like a part of his "dress" (or whatever it's called), specially that the fisherman is gonna be riding him so you'll have lots of props and hanging stuff.. maybe that would help :

Chem - this is all zbrush work. I'm working on the bump now. I'm waiting for another update on your character.
Sherif - thanks for the crit, I agree with you about the bumps on the back. I find when I bring it back into XSI I lose a lot of detail, so my bump map will have to make up for it. I'll be detailing the eye with the bump as well; thanks for spending your time to gather some ref images for me. As for the fisherman riding the beast, I'm most likely make a new character that'll suit him more. I'll post some more concept in a bit.

Hey Adam!
I'm liking the progress of the model...A LOT!
Modeling wise....not much to say....You know your path...now, just walk on it:scream:
Animation...afterwards...of course. What if the beast would do like the elephants and rhinos, you know when they stand by a tree, and rub the skin on it?! That would be sweet! :bounce:
Color, Bump and Spec maps.....would look nice if you'd add some mud on the back, like if the beats just came from a mud bath, like hippos and crocs! hehehe
Great Job, SpongeBullet!

Thanks for the comments guys. Yeah I can't wait until he's coloured either, and face shapes will be fun. I've thrown together a concept for a rider, since I've been waiting for my displacement to render. I'm leaning toward a voodoo-like rider.. he has a collection of animal skulls strung behind him and throwing spears on his right. Nothing is finalized yet so I'm eager to hear any suggestions.
http://student.vfs.com/~3d53adams/riderconcept.jpg
Sherif.Nagib
07-05-2005, 03:15 AM
that definitely matches with him more than the fisherman, good choice..
I've no comments on the rider in this stage actually, I like the fact that you're giving him this belly, even if the rest of his body is kinda muscular the belly would still work .. kinda different from the fisherman cause the fisherman was a fit guy .
and actually with an african guy/warrior you'll have lots of work to do with texturing and props and also tons of options to choose from, the way they dress vary from an area to another, and their position in the tribe too, I wouldn't count only on the internet here and I would definitely pay a visit to the vancouver public library, u don't have to be a member to search for some refs and photocopy them, they even have a color photocopier (I guess u'll have to pay for that tho), or take a digital camera with you.

yo adam ,
i really like where your going with this new character design theres alot you can do with this one, it definatly has a better feel than the fisherman, imo you should do alot of piercing in the flesh and some tribal tattoos, maybe give him a shield of some sort, that would be intresting, over all good job tho man

Hi,
This is amazing work and has come a long way since the concept. I just have one crit which is from a biological point of view (although this aint a real creature!). The area where the skull meets the spine seems to be bent at an awkward angle, so that the skull seems to be pushed back too far. I realise that youre going for a certain style so this may be ignored....
but other than this small detail it is an excellent piece and you are a hugely talented artist.
Well done!!! 9 thumbs up!
PS. I also just had a thought about the whole tail problem (i agree that it would look better with a tail). If you really dont want the tail, you could make it look like its been torn off or amputated, recently or long ago. This would also add depth and context to the character (fitting in with the voodoo/warrior who is his master)

I love it. There isn't really much to say but if I had to find someting to crit I would say that underneath his tail/nub is a little flat, but I don't know if that's part of the design. Good Zbrushing skills, good bump mapping, and good coloring. Definatly inspirational. 5 stars dude

hey scotcho, i love the consistent updates, but i think you rushed your texture abit, not sure what the red spots are supposed to be, they look more like blotches of spray paint. well, as I said before.. awesome work man , the dark spots on the big bumps really worked fine in hiding the blurriness of it, but I have to agree with andrew on the red spots, to be frank I didn't notice them at the start.. but after I read his post suddenly they became annoying .. they look kinda random , specially having one of them on one eye and not on the other side. but other than that I think the texture is really amazing and just by looking at it you can tell the amount of work that's put into it .

AndrewHwang – Totally agree with the spray painted red. I died that down a lot and blended it more with the skin. I was looking at a lot of toad references for when I was texturing, but only based my texture on it… couldn’t go all the way because with the size he is it wouldn’t look right.

nice update , i like where this has gone i thought before it looked too saturated.
I still have a bit of a problem with the overall tones of this beast. Its mostly green i think you could find some complimentary colors and apply them to his belly, where does this creature live? maybe a thinl layer of moss on his back , purples around the eyes, subtle dirt inside the creases, warts, moles and other deep blemishing. Anyhow you are on the righ track scott, just a bit more.

-feebs "can't animate well" bergman
p.s. i like the voodoo warrior guy alot better for this beast.
but in my opinion, i think you should work on the design of the warrior a little bit more. for example, to me he looks like he might come from the desert. but the beast seems to be more of a swampy creature. maybe give the warrior things like fish scale armor/clothing and accesories with grasses and cat-tails and stuff? and the paint on his skin could be more like mud/chlorophyl/blood colours. i'm liking the skull helmet :)

You really are coming alone very well with this. I'm very impressed.
I assume XSI is the software you are using. How do you find the polygon modelling ability compaired with 3D Studio Max 7. If you had to pick between the two which one?
I have always used Max, but most of the models on this forum that impress me are the people using XSI.
Could be just that more artistic people use XSI, and not that it's a better tool for the job.

A run animation would look sweet with that fat lizard's wiggle shacking all the attacted items and with the tribal man holding on for dear life. Very nice piece, Scott.
The rider looks great! I love his belly!
I think you should work a little on his palm . Right now it seems the rider does not have a strong grip.
Excellent modeling work! Keep it up!

HI,
I don't post that often but I just had to with this model. I've been watching this from the start and I'm blown away. This has to be my favorite character of all time on cgtalk. I think I would pay good money to see this guy move, please animate them.

Hi Scotcho,
Could you please take the time to post a message about how you modelled the fabric used to cover the character.
It looks so good I wonder if you used a clothing dynamics tool or something. Is there a trick you could explain to get the fabric to look pulled tight, and flexing.
I'm impressed about how you are able to switch from organic modelling, to solids modelling, and then to cloth modelling.
Very few can do that switch! I'm impressed.
awesome!
im thouroughly impressed! that guy up there on the mount made this even more impressive.
His piercings reminds me of herb. :wise:

Looks amazing as always, only bit of C+C is the knee joint, it just looks slightly off, the calf where its squeezed kinda goes in a bit at the top, when in real life when your knee is bent like that it all rises together (depending on body fat, of which I have none and mine does it) get a pair of shorts on and have a go at sitting like that in the labs!
Great work mate. Cant wait to see it textured.
Scotcho
07-28-2005, 06:27 PM
Heber – thanks buddy, figured some herb ears would be a nice touch
AndrewHwang – yeah, the volumetric lighting would look pretty cool. I was leaning toward a swampy theme rather than a desert.. hopefully the textures will lock that down. I’ll fix that ear pinch stat. Thanks.
Louis J. Browne – I would like to rig this beast up.. maybe give it a small animation as well.. not sure about a run animation though but we’ll see what I have time for.
SUS – Thank you, I agree with you on his palm. I’ll give it another once over but I do plan to rig his hands to hold the reigns, might do most of the tweaking then.
Tinitus – Thanks!
Bradjames – Wow thanks for the comments. As for the animation.. I’ll see what I have time for. I would love to see him animated as well.
Neeno – Thank you Neeno. I think it’d be fun to do a low poly character like this but it would need an amazing texture artist to pull it off, using lots of transparency in their maps. Zbrush is a pretty cool tool, shouldn’t take you more than a day to learn. Look forward to seeing some of Neeno-zbrushing in the future.
Mustang9 – Hey mustan9, thanks for commenting.. you’re very motivating. I am using XSI 4.2 to model. Couldn’t really compare it to Studio because I have never used it.. but I’ve been told XSI is one of the top for modeling with its tools. There are some addons for Maya (polytools) that mimic some of XSI’s so I’m sure there’s something for max you could get. XSI seems to have all I need for modeling. For the cloth.. I started out with a grid. I didn’t use any cloth dynamics, but thanks for the compliment. I tried to get the line flow start at the pinned section and fan out from there. If there was another pinned section I would have a majority of the wrinkles lead up to there from the other. The line flow would almost look like a zig-zag from hole to hole. I’d also have the line flow halo out from the holes. If its pulled tight, the fabric would be straight from hole to hole, and if its not it would be sagging with to gravity. The sag should be a smooth arc.. not irregular. I've attached a shot of its wireframe. Hope all this helps. Glad you like my work.
Pum – lol oh yeah unwrapping will be blast.. cant wait! Maybe I’ll emphasize his gut and sag his titties a bit more.. make him a little more jolly.
Chems - Thanks for the crit Chems.. I totally agree. I'll fix the knee up.

I forgot to ask, all those bits of rope etc, what method do you use to do that, is there a clever tool in XSi for this?
Awesome I love the guy on the beast.
Scotcho
07-28-2005, 09:55 PM
Thanks for the comments! Chems, for those little rope bits: I draw a curve, shape it to how I want the rope, create a circle with the width I want to use for the rope, extrude the circle along the curve, further tweak the curve to have the geometry fit the object and tweak the width of it by scaling the circle. Quick process, I'm sure there's similar methods in other programs.

Awesome work. Absolutely love it. Tremendous modeling. I would love to see this guy run. Hell I'd love to ride him!
The only crit I have, it is a small one since this piece rocks so hard, is that the reigns don't seem quite right. That may just be me, though. The reigns should definietly be able to pull the beast by the mouth. It think the extra attachment looks cool but is too long. I would end it closer to the edge of the mouth and if anything have it curve back towards the rider to give him more control.

wow! your work is amazing! one thing...like the person above said...the bit in his mouth would most likely to be turned the other way round...facing the rider...its the same with horses...so the bit turns up into the horses mouth for more control if that makes sense(can u tell i have horses! hehehe)!...maybe turn it round and see how it looks. but even so it looks amazing! :) also perhaps make the reins slightly thicker.

sarNz – thanks, nice to know you’re following along with me. After doing some more designs on the beast I figured the fisherman wouldn’t fit what I was going for.. plus I get to do another character.
KWAK – thank you Kwak, your latest mobster model was very impressive
Andy H – I love the grey renders as well, but I’m going for modeling and texturing reel... nice to know you like it!
Exthalion – thanks!
Jinian – The beast has a basic rig right now, but I do planning on rigging them both properly for a very small animation to give them life. I was leaning for a bit stylized, kind of like Blizzards cinematic work I suppose. For the design, I made it myself based off some fat herbivores, toads and the rhino beast from Starwars Episode II.
El-vio – thank you, I’m almost halfway done I think, still have to texture the rest.
Dmonk – thanks for the nice comments!
Sherif.Nagib – Cheerleading is always a good thing, I’ll make sure to check that reference out for my lighting, thanks
Isolated vertex – thanks for the crit, I agree about the reigns. I’ll be rigging them into pose when the rider is posed out as well, so that should fix that.
K888tie – thank you, I’ve adjusted the mouth bits to make more sense

Hey Scott, im trying to texture flowy like cloth, kinda simialr to the canopy, i was wondering if you would try using sub surface or just working with translucency maps, im debating right now as to which one i should use., love the textures btw
Scotcho
08-01-2005, 08:37 AM
I'm sure transluency will give you the effect you need.. thats all I plan on using. I bet something like SSS or diffusion could give you a better result but for how much more it'd improve with the rendertime I'm not willing to sacrifice it.
Heber
08-01-2005, 08:42 AM
Subscribed to this thread far back..i love seeing your updates, the drawings you put on the canopy are awesome as well...a nice touch!
on another note..........
correct me if i am wrong but sss is a way of interpreting light penetrating thru a surface then scattering around inside of it to produce the effect, cloth does NOT do this even in direct sunlight. Translucency is enough and much much less intense on render time...
so yeah where do you want to work dude? haha ..i miss vfs...those crazy latenight trips to 7-11 .....sigh...as tired as you are...enjoy it! youll miss it later.. :D

Looks great, and the character art work on the fabric is really cool.
I really like the stiching of the ripped section.
Only crit is that the bump mapping scale appears to large.
Here are some ideas, but just ideas take it or leave it cause it still looks good. Add some weathering around the edges of the fabric, and some noise as well, because the color is to uniform.
EDIT: On second thought I think the color is fine.

going pretty good adam , gr8 job on the canopy and the saddle, where's the wheelchair man tho ?:)
one comment about the canopy : I'm not sure if they would be able to get such a big piece of leather in the old days , so maybe u wanna show that it's made of 2 pieces by having a long stitch going across it's width or some patches.. not sure actually, maybe they could get such long pieces from snakes or some other animal.
what about the skull and bone colors ?.. are they treated or been buried for a while ?.. I guess they would be whiter or at least have some white parts in them.
keep going :buttrock:

The tree park looks great!
I think the skull needs some more details. For example; Skulls usually have little cracks that allowed the head shape to change during birth, but heal quickly afterwards. The nose cavity looks to smooth. Sorry to point this out after you did the texturing.
Given the fact that you have so much detail in the model, then I don't think people will notice.

Sherif.Nagib - I've added a bit of stitching to break up the canopy.. and will go back and tweak the skulls colour. Thanks.
chikos - thank you
Weider - thanks!
mustan9 - I do plan on taking the skulls into zbrush for a normal map so I'll be puttin in some cracks in the bone there. Maybe I'll throw some more geometry in the nose cavity later on, it is very smooth there. Glad you like it.
Neeno - hey Neeno, thanks buddy. I'm using XSI's mental ray. The settings are pretty low for these quick renders but the final will have higher quality. The lighting will change too, I plan on using some volumetrics for the canopy's holes.. but other than that it shouldn't change too much, unless you've got some lighting suggestions.

hey scotcho nice update man! dude roughly what size are your textures you using for this model?
Scotcho
08-06-2005, 03:49 PM
magnumstar - thank you. So far its been about 3 1/2 weeks for modeling and texturing the accessories and rider.. and about 3 weeks for what I have for the beast. I've had a little side project while I was working on this.
pum - yeah I agree, I've just changed the colours of the leather to vary it up a bit. I knew it might be a problem with so much leather in one area. I'll have to adjust the beast to make sure he doesn't blend in with the rest of it as well. Thanks.
alientje - thanks! I'm rendering out a rotation test right now to see how the drawings look. I don't want them to stand out too much but to have them as a subtle touch. I'll check it out though.
Neeno - heya Neeno, thank you. Textures sizes are 2k for the leather/rope, 2k for the canopy/cloth, 2k for the wood/skulls, prob 3k for the rider/feather, beast is 4k. I may be scaling them down for my renders to save rendertime, but seems to be pretty fast except for the beast displacement. Nice work on the grasshopper by the way.

Thats stunning mate, nearly perfect, only one thing that bugs me, the reed that goes up in back of the canopy, I think its a reed like out of a pond or such, it just looks like it couldnt possibly stay there in that postion when moving, and the neck bends quite sharply so the top is pointing in a slightly diffrent direction, a more gentle curve, and a more forced in between the ropes look would for me, make this perfect! Amazing work mate.

Thanks the the feedback, I appreciate it.
Yeah Chems I've fixed those floating cat tail weeds; I've got them tied to the branches now.. also made sure they weren't jaggedly bent.
Thanks Gigan, I will be adjusting the light to finish him up. If it doesn't give enough contrast to what I have I'll go back to the maps and tweak them there. I have added a nice bounce light, and some translucency to the feathers.. but I want to get some subtle volumetrics in there as well. Next model will be a hard body. Thanks for the comments, glad you all like the rig. I've finished the animation for the model rotation and a walk cycle. I'll be updating my site tonight with the animation and some rotations. I'll be updating the beast at the finished works pretty quick. Thanks for all the feedback along the way, you guys really help tweak my model.
Heres a preview frame from the textured rotation:

Hey man,
Jeez, I didn't realise this was even going. Guess I have something to watch ;) The still looks really keen, can't wait for the turntable.
Love the rider's stance particularly, looks pretty convincing to me for a lotta tribal type situations and also where ppl ride on elephants and stuffs.
Awesome stuff as always
Edit: Just been looking at the glyphs on the canvas, bwahahaha. I love the one of the fisher, they're all pretty awesome though. Nice "tightness" on the stretched canvas parts o_O

I appreciate it, isolated vertex, but this one is done. I have tweaked some subtle colours since then but nothing that noticable. Feel free to check out my WIP reel on my site.. it includes this model's rotations, walk cycle and rig test. I'm moved on to work a hard body robot right now. Thanks for the comments.

Nice demo reel!
Ok. Please tell us what's happening in your life now! :)
Are you finished school?
Have you sent out your reel to anyone, and have you gotten any responces?
What are your hopes of landing your targetted job and position?
God I would kill to have a reel like that! (know anyone I could kill? just joking..)
Good job!

wow thanks guys. Well I'm not done school yet, that reel is still a work in progress.. I'll be showing my some texture maps and have the robot on there as well. I'll be graduating end of October and will be working for work then.. but right now I haven't sent what I have to other companies; I'll wait until its finished before I do that. I hope to work in the game industry.. film would be cool too. Isolated vertex, it is in the finished works.. you can check the link in my signature for that.
