I’m making this post to inquire if any members of the CG community could recommend from first hand knowledge a good UV automatic mapping utility either stand alone or for Maya. I am currently investigating the possibilities for UV mapping objects on a massive scale for the purpose of light map generation. The results of maps created and packed by hand has proven to be far superior to those generated from Maya’s sub par automatic map utility and I would like to see what other options commercial and otherwise are out there for evaluation or purchase. Thanks in advance for any recommendations people can make.

Maya has a very good UV mapping toolset. I've never had any problems with its cylindrical, spherical, etc UV maps, although they always need some tweaking. Maya has a particularly good Relax function for UV mapping which takes quite a lot of work out of the editing process.
