Spriogyro and I decided to throw ourselves into a mini challenge with a subject of "a port, a dock (dry, wet whatever it is) or a marina".

We are inviting you all to our "port" time to time and see how it is get shaped and of course you are free to bring your critics together with you.

After doing some reference hunting to get ideas, I came across this photo and I really like it. It's a photo by Hannes Niedner a hobbiest, who doesn't mind people using his photo if it's not for commercial use. I think I'm gonna do something a little different with it, but try to keep the same feel. I'm gonna change the composition alittle because I'm not very fond of the horizon line being so centered. I'm also thinking of changing the time of day alittle to be able to show off the pier better. I hope you like it! I can't wait to get started!!

This is my first piece. I'm gonna mess around with the texture a little and add some decals and spray paint. I think gonna start making each of the props and then compsite the rest of the scene. I can't wait to start making some boats!!

I started roughing out the pier here and added some light posts. I'm not sure if I like them, give me some suggestions....Obviously, I'm gonna make the pier longer.

Here's render on the start of the pier. I don't like the seem of wood in the middle. I'm probably going to offset them to give some variation.

Feel free to critique please. I work better with feedback.

HEY KUZ, where are you...? I'm looking forward to your progress..

Cool challenge guys, good luck with it :)

spiro; Hehe I would kick over one of the barrels, I would want to anyway, and it could provide yet more variation of position ^_^

All this water also makes me think there might be a bird waiting around somewhere. Not gulls but maybe a heron or something, like a fishing bird. I do not know what is appropriate like this for a coast area of water, but you probably see how I mean. Thinking like somewhere not an important part of the scene, but somewhere, waitin for fish ;)

Hope those are helpful ideas, it's a really good start I think.

Augh,

Yeah, I will try to make some type of variations probably in textures and in placement. You also have to remember that there will be a whole bunch of stuff on the pier itself. I'm thinking of benches, a storage shack, a couple of telescopes, garbage, those "things" you tie a boat to and I'm even gonna make a small staircase that leads to a lower platform where you can get in the boats from. So there's definatly going to be alot of things to break up the variation.

I was definatly thinking of adding birds to this scene as well. Thanks for the ideas.

What do you guys think of the lights? I'm not very happy with them.

lights?? they seem a little umm short.. maybe just have 3 or 4 along the wharf alot taller and have big logs sticking out of the water supporting the wharf ... very similar to the photo ref you first posted up... would add a nice effect to the scene if you slant them on different angles too..

I see that Spiro nearly completed the half  . Oh, I must take it serious as soon as possible.

Tomorrow I will enter an examination and this long delay about every CG project (on my side of course) will end soon I hope. Then, possibly I will add my first entry tomorrow, I can say that for now.

Anyway. Good to hear again Neeno. Man, you know where to go as it seems  , welcome to the Port of Spiro and Levent's Marina. :wavey: Augh you are also welcomed.

Enjoy your visits boys.

Well, I plan to describe a small port. This is a basic view from the seaside.
And in the bigger picture I show you three differently textured bollards.
Which one seems better?

Here's another little update, I'm expanding the pier into a dock. Next I'm going to be modeling the shore. I think I'm going to make a small port village. This should be fun, I've got a lot of ideas. As far as the wood on the pier.......There's too much wood and it's starting to look a little repetative, I think I'm gonna change it.....but probably later. Please critique..

Btw, Kuzgunoglu nice textures on the bollards!

Here's another update, I started working on the building entrance to the peir. I just noticed that I have reflections on the screen window, I have to take that off. Anyway, I'm still waiting for a response from Kuz.....Oh, and BTW,can someone please critique my work? I need some feedback here...

hey there dude.. once again its me commenting on your work Lol not sure why no1 else is its looking quiet good but im gonna stick commenting on it... I did notice something about your textures like i said before they do look good, having a look at it again(after update) it just lacks realism..what i mean by that the textures are good but there is no Bird droppings for examples.. A pier like that would be a popular place for Sea Gull droppings. another example would be salt decay on the colour of the poles holding up the pier.. Maybe have oysters that have stuck down the bottom of the logs.. would be something to consider... Its also lacking shadows... i know they really test renders but it is gonna look flat without shadows no matter how much text you do.. so maybe a little darker shadows.. In the black backround render where the camera is really far away you can notice the shadows but in the latest renders i cant really notice them at all...

See how you go i hope my comments and crits have helped...

cheers

Neeno your right. It must have been the angle of the spotlight. This is just a quick test of mood and a image for a background.

the anit-aliasing is crappy, sorry it was just a preview....

Neeno
07-08-2005, 07:46 AM
you can ntocei shadows alot better.. backround looks ok.. now to texture updates.. like i said earlier dirty them up a bit with natures on realism.. Gimme those bird droppings..

Your progress seems verily faster than me.
Seems very realistic though, i think you must change the street lights. I think design not suits to the whole. If you'd model a concrete pier, maybe it would be ok but you can guess, a wooden plank dockage or pier recalls something different..

spirogyro
07-08-2005, 09:56 PM
That's the same issue I was having earlier. I didn't like the design as well. I'll come up with something else. Thanks KUZ! I'm still waiting to see your progress too.

That's ok, when you have the time let me know. I'm going to continue this project on my own. Maybe we can pick some other topic then, since I would have done this already.
