Hope this will be useful for someone ;-)

In the plugins/utility folder of a normal Lightwave8 installation I discovered a small zip file named kaydara.zip. In this archive there is a import/export plugin for the proffesional Kaydara FBX format, witch seems to be very capable(subd's, UV's, animation). With this plugin, you can exchange geometry&ANIMATION data between the following 3d packages: lw, maya, xsi, 3dmax(quads are supported!). Unfortunately, plugins for other packages must be downloaded from other place, probably kaydara site. There isn't need for any expensive Kaydara product.

Have a nice day!

Does this plugin actually work? Because my experience in using the latest fbx plugin for LW 8 was that it did not work. I resorted to reinstalling my 7.5 fbx plugins in order to continue working with motion builder.

I can't test if it works with other apps. I'm working only with Lightwave, and in Maya PLE(Learning edition) I can't install additional plugins, due to Alias restrictions. I'm just curious if it works, many ppl asked for Project Beaver or other import/export plugin.

It works great for me. I go between modo/Lightwave and Maya. I prefer building and surfacing with modo or Modeller, and bring the result into Maya. Morph targets come in as blendshapes and bones come in as well. FBX is a very slick format.

Getting models from LW to other packages has never really been a problem for me, but I've never had any luck taking FBX files that originated from other programs and getting them to load properly in LW (the idea being to take models created in Maya, XSI, etc., animate them in MotionBuilder, then surface and render them in LW). Anyone have any experience doing this sort of thing? It seems like the LW->MB->LW workflow works fine, but the (any program other than LW)->MB->LW workflow just doesn't....um, work.

The really interesting thing with FBX is getting the plug-in for Quicktime. This allows you to export your LightWave scene to FBX and then load that FBX into Quicktime equipped with the plug-in. The user with such a Quicktime can load the 3D scene into Quicktime and either play the animation, and/or navigate around the scene...
