Hello,

I am going to be moving from MAX to Lightwave in my new job. Training will be provided, however I would like to have an advance look at the software.

I have made a brief stop by the Newtek site, and there doesn't appear to be a trial download available. Does a Lightwave 30-day demo or similar exist?

Is there a resource on the web where I could look at sample screen grabs of the software layout?

Many thanks in advance,

David

I own LW8 ... but when you dont you use your dongle key the software will run only in discovery mode, and plants a watermark over the redered image, i would have imagined this would be the demo version until you unlock it, like digital fusion, but i have not see anywhere you can d/l this so im not sure dood but jus a lil info

PS ... ur gonna luv LW ..from a cluttered UI to a nice clean one .. ull love! .. well i did !:D

Probably the best place to get an idea of the software layout would be free video tutorials.
This thread over in LW Resources should help:

I think you will need to speak with somebody at Newtek about obtaining a demo (discovery edition). In the meantime, you might also peruse their ftp site and see what luck you have.

There are some videos in the multimedia folder.

welcome to the forum! Everyone here is quite nice, but as a whole we're a bit neurotic. :D

just out of interest, what work are you going to be doing in Lightwave? If it's mainly modelling then Modo might give you a rough idea as the tools work in a similar fashion & have most of the same shortcuts.......it's made by ex-lightwave guys after all.

It might also be worth asking your new employers about borrowing the disc, I'm not sure of the legalities of this but as has already been mentioned.....it runs in demo mode unless you have the dongle inserted so you're not stealing it or using it illegally as it is freely distributed by Newtek.....although you do have to bug them a bit. I'm sure that your new boss would be ok about it as you'd get a head start.

Free downloads. Should give you a quick way to get up to speed.

Call Newtek they will mail you a CD free. Really.

"You can also contact our Sales department at 1-800-847-6111, and they will send you a LightWave [8] demo disk. Free call, free disk, free shipping."

So if there's a demo cd available free, free, free, why isn't that info easily found on NT's site? For that matter, why isn't it just a simple download?
That's just silly.

Funny, I considered a job about a year ago where I'd be going the other way. I looked at a lot of those "Max for Dummies" books. The things that will really seem alien to you will probably be the separation of Modeler and Layout as well as modeling in general.
You might benefit from going to the Modo forum here and reading the threads where Maya users were struggling to comprehend the way things are done in Modo. My exposure to other 3D apps is limited, but it seems that the modeling process in Max and Maya is similar and that is very different than LW and since Modo and LW have similar approaches to the process of modeling, you might find some threads worded in ways that would make immediate sense to you.

I hope that made sense.
