Are those effects shots finished? I couldn't help but notice some things... like when he tosses that yellow car he never physically touches it. It looked really odd...
I think I'm the only one not buying the hype on this. It looks really bad... I dunno how else to put it. I liked the LOTR movies a lot, but Jackson is very hit and miss... mostly miss. Most people seem to think of him as the second coming. I think LOTR was a fluke. We'll see.

I have to say this looks gorgeous. Some of the Kong shots looked off to be but when I frame by framed it, it looks ok. So I'm not sure what feels off.
But the cinematography looks superb. I'm glad they placed it in the early 1900's and didn't make it a modern adaption.

Yes l'm not as impressed as l hoped l'd be regarding effects, l'm not worried about anything else. But some of the shots, like when Kong grabs the girl and pulls her out of frame look a bit off in the animation or something and also one shot of when the dinosaurs are chasing the characters looks like it's been comped so l don't know if it's the lighting or what.
l really can only comment from a punters point off view as l am no one to judge what's good animation or good compositing but all l know at this point in time is that some of those shots just have a 1 or 2 % fake factor to them that just makes me not believe what l'm seeing, maybe they'll look better on a big screen.

Hit and miss? Name a miss... the films most non-New Zealanders have seen by Jackson are limited to LOTR, and gee, I dunno - I thought that was 3 hits in a row  People don't fluke 3 wildly successful major motion pictures 3 years running... I know I haven't at least...
As to his previous work, Braindead, Bad Taste, Heavenly Creatures etc they were all great in completly different ways, for different reasons. As to the FX's, it's CGTalk and there's always people pointing out that on frame 52 the litter in the background looked like it had greenscreen spill...
PS: Yes Im a New Zealander, no I'm not a rabid fanboy and no, I didn't work on it.
Ill bet you 6 months of 100 hour weeks that It'll look fantastic when its out ;)

Some of the CG shots look like they haven't been graded properly yet and the motionblur looks completely off in one or two shots. Then again, the LOTR films had pretty inconsistent cinematography and varying VFX quality throughout, so maybe King Kong will have the same half good/half mediocre look to it. We'll see.

i second that, sheep factory. The effects will be mind blowing and decent, just like in LOTR, but in the end you're gonna find that you don't give a crap cuz peter just has a nack for telling a good story. It'll be another perfect blend of great VFX and even better storytelling... i can't wait!

Hmmmm, people are simply liking this trailer just because of the "Lord of the Rings" effect. Looks good, but from I see the late 70's Kong looks better and more fierce. This Kong looks like Might Joe Young.
Interesting concept, but I dont think it will be the movie of the Christmas Holiday. Moie goers are telling Hollywood execs this summer that re-makes "suck."
Proceed w/caution PJ Godzilla failed as well. Remember and Speilberg warned them that it would.

Just watched it again on TV. Looks much better on a TV screen, most of the colour correction... corrects itself...
And a refreshing trailer really, no comic-relief, no spoilers, and nothing excessively dramatic.
Also, Peter Jackson has said the trailer is still a work in progress, even Kong's fur length is still being decided. Maybe they will make him a bit bigger too :)

Are those effects shots finished? I couldn't help but notice some things... like when he tosses that yellow car he never physically touches it. It looked really odd...
quite right, but it probably due to his massive size tat he only has to flick, but what bohers me most is when you go frame by fame on that scene you actually see the cab go "through" the runner by, or rather it has no effect on them.
and the scene when he catchs the girl and pulls her off the scene looks odd becaus again if you go frame by frame you see that as kong drops you see him physically gettin larger.
Whoo hooo! I'm loving it so far, but I hope they don't go any cheeser...I'm with-holding final judgement until the film is complete as is the effects work...but so far PJ has 2 sold tickets!

it's strange to see so much things in this first trailer. it presume a lot of incredible action in this movie..
the look of the photo is really good and the duality between the 2 heros ( king kong and Adrien Brody ) is well done.
the first kk shot look like the C.rombaldi's one, but the last one is awsome..a lot of character in is expression
my idea of king kong was bigger than that, but it's not my movie.
i cant wait to see the fight of two male for the love of a woman !
will king kong live and go back in the jungle with his new fiancée ?

I hope so too...
Jackson is good but he is hit and miss - the LOTR pics were full of inconsistencies and IMO bad directing and acting...
I think this trailer is way too early/unfinished...I understand the needs of marketing but this is just as bad as the first look at the Hulk...
the constant dumb-ass look on Naomi Watts' face is annoying...

Even though I love Jackson loved LOTR and count Dead Alive/Braindead as one of my favorite gross-out movies of all time, I'm not amped to see this.
Kong was done right in the thirties why remake it? Yes, the special effects in the Jackson version will be fantastic and better than the original but it doesn't seem like a radical imagining of the original King Kong concept.
I hope Jackson will do something NEW for his next movie.
BTW I hope this remake trend dies before some IDIOT thinks they can remake "Before The Earth Stood Still."

Well i'm really hyped for this movie. Although alot of people are fed up of Dino flicks, but i just can't get enough. Heck, my favorite movie is still Jurassic Park. I'm sure some of the animation will be touched up. Like someone else posted, they're still not sure how long Kong's hair should be. I think if you watch these types of trailers frame by frame, your bound to find something you don't like. So in the end, you can't please everyone.

Concerning the question about a "bigger kong"...
Perhaps, in this new movie, the creators took into consideration the accurate anatomy and size of the dinosaurs and, thus, based Kong's height off them. In the original film, the size of the dinosaurs seemed much larger than today's factual information would suggest.
Another consideration, if he was the size of the Godzilla, how would they transport him of the island? Their ship is not that big.
Overall, the trailer looked pretty good. However, personally I don't care for acrobatic-CG camera movements. I just don't find it natural.

I like the trailer and I can see some irregular points people are pointing out, but it's still in production. But Kongs eyes aren't intense, especially in that last shot, they look grayed/glossed over like they have cataracts.

I only saw one when Kong roared in the cave, with a quick zoom-out above the sea surface, and in the beginning, above NY, but that could've been done with a heli too, if the buildings were still the same.

Wow, that looked good. I've been wanting to see this trailer for a big time now... They had to rush some stuff to get the trailer done, by the way. If you check out the production diary's you will see that pretty much everyone working aboard worked on the LOTR films as well, I just found out Howard Shore is composing again. So I think if you enjoyed LOTR, you should definitely see this one. I thought the VFX looked very good by the way.

Umm, guys - they have 5-6 months left.
Most big VFX films are still very far from the end in the last 6 months. You rush to get temps done for trailers, but most shots are not yet finaled. They are 'trailer final' - just done enough to meet the trailer deadline. The movie will probably look great. Funny that everyone in here who loves fx is so critical. Go frame by frame the original star wars, indiana jones, or a disney feature why dontcha. OMG, stuff is not always perfect!

Umm. Well, I'm give Peter Jackson points for keeping with the structure and spirit of the original...but I hope its not going to be a "and the hero does a double-back-flip, kicks the T-Rex in the Knackers, sommersaults over the Spikes and out runs the Dinos capable of jogging at 30mphr..." junk fest.
And I certainly hope they ditch that dreadful music - Its nothing without a Max Steiner style score.

It's a trailer, not the movie. The dinos don't look like they even have any color on them yet. It's a WIP.
It looks like it's be fun. I'm not crazy about the look of the dinos. They look a bit cartoony. The T-rex teeth look like croc teeth.

As far as the size of Kong goes, in the original he was supposed to be 50 ft. tall. In this one he is 25 ft. tall. I assume that was to make it more realistic as far as battling dinosaurs. No T-rex was 50 ft. tall.

Imagine a 5 meter tall, 13 meter long pitbull terrier weighing 6,000 kilograms taking on a 50 foot ape. I'm not sure that the difference in size and weight between a T-rex and a 50 foot ape would be the determining factor of who wins... :)

my first thought was - i hope the cg is not final...
bout the story - i like it very much and i like the actors too, jack black and adrian rules!
Cant wait to see kong fighting dinos and i also like his size, its a little bit more credible. i never liked the big apes walking on 2 feet.
i am sure peter did a great work on directing, he is drawing the characters very well.

'Twas beauty killed the beast.
If they end the movie with that again... well... most people these days would be like, no it wasn't beauty that killed the beast, it was bringing it 5000 miles out of its natural habitat and then shooting it with machine guns - we won't relate. As much as I applaude staying true to the original I hope they do make some small script changes!

This is what PJ told "the Dominion Post" yesterday:
Though the trailer revealed Kong, Jackson said he was still tweaking the computer-generated gorilla's final image. "We are still deciding on the length of his fur, how tangled it should be, how much grey to work around the eyes."
Kong is between 120 and 150 years old. "He is past his prime and isn't the super-virile ape of 30 years ago. We had the notion that Kong's jawbone was smashed in an ancient fight and mended itself at a crooked angle."
The director also cleared up confusion about Kong's size. Posters for the 1933 King Kong exaggerated his height to 50ft (15.2m) to sell more tickets. On screen Kong was 5.4m (18ft) tall on Skull Island, then increased to 7.3m (24ft) to look more threatening in New York scenes. Jackson will stick to 7.6m

I went to see War of the Worlds this evening and the Kong trailer showed before hand. People in the audience actually applauded! :)

hahaha.... wait, you're kidding, right? well according to every recent blockbuster released since Jurassic park. Its all frikin eye candy now with a script written in the time someone was taking a dump.
I mean whats the point of KingKong? We all know what the ending is going to be. Its not like its going to be anything new. it reeks of cheese.

'What's the point?'
It might make some money?
Peter Jackson has wanted to do it for a long time?
People who have never seen the original and wouldn't watch a film from 1933 might want to see it?
even though this is going to be closer to the original than other recent remakes (e.g. Day of the Dead, Assault on Precinct 13), why not do it if you can tell the story without the limitations of 1933 technology, e.g. without requiring the camera moves to be locked off or moving very simply on effects shots?

..once again, bringing life to the child inside me :D
You mean to tell me that child has been dead for a while? *snickers*
Yeah, I was gettting goosebumps watching this trailer. The feeling is that you want this thing to kick-ass and I don't understand these comments about, "this idea has been done"-yadda-yadda. I can't help but back the WETA wizards on this one!
My theater got the cheer (ala Leigh's camp) after the trailer as well. The mark was made.

I think this "teaser" should be named as a "spoiler". I lost my interest to rush to a movies when it arrives. I mean, like some had already said it looks more like a "Mighty Joe" than a fierce King Kong! First time I saw Kong in this trailer I thought it's a "baby-Kong", because it looks so small and almost cute compared to original. It would be better to make him bigger than original to get that "wow-factor" we got when we saw the original movie.
Those other dinos in the jungle are so bright they looked like they forgot to texture them (I know they didn't forgot that)...just bumps or displacements in use...hehe.
Well, it's only a teaser. Maybe baby-Kong grows to a full size before release, heee!

As far as the size of Kong goes, in the original he was supposed to be 50 ft. tall. In this one he is 25 ft. tall. I assume that was to make it more realistic as far as battling dinosaurs. No T-rex was 50 ft. tall.
Who cares about measures between real and fiction in a scifi-movie? It should be about making Kong a huge beast instead of a tiny furry monkey as it looks now. If you watch original King Kong movie there is a lot's of strange anomalies like Kongs hand is suddenly bigger on some shot and like that...and that's because it makes scene more intense. They used that trick in the Godzilla too, where it's head was enormous on some shots compared to others.
They even added a horns on T-rex so why not making it 50 ft. tall? That would made Rex more fierce too.

Yes, there will be a sequel named "Kongs wedding" soon.

So where exactly did you see those camera movements? I only saw one when Kong roared in the cave, with a quick zoom-out above the sea surface, and in the beginning, above NY, but that could've been done with a heli too, if the buildings were still the same.

Posters are posters...I do not care. Fact is that in the new movie Kong is not scary enough. He should be at least 10m tall. In original movie he looked bigger and was really a beast to be afraid of.

ultimately it's all a matter of opinion, but in mine, i'd call peter jackson the savior of the blockbuster. LOTR has everything that a well done blockbuster needs. (ala - Jurassic Park) VFX to SUPPORT a great story/script with powerful performances.
i forget where i read it, but a reporter was allowed to watch an early animatic of the conclusion of Kong at Jackson's house, and it got really quiet after it was over. Then pete's wife said to the reporter, "THAT'S why he's making this movie." Appartently is was really emotional, which is strange to think about when it involves a giant ape. You can bet that this movie will be done well, with a powerful emotional story SUPPORTED by great VFX.
but the new star wars prequels prove the "Good VFX are more important than a good story." comment wrong,.

So you've seen it! Dude, how did you swing that?! You must be friends with Peter Jackson, right?
why are you stating "FACTS" about a movie that isn't even out yet?

all cg, my friend. But not all acrobatic movements, my friend ;)
"However, personally I don't care for acrobatic-CG camera movements. I just don't find it natural."
"THAT'S why he's making this movie." Appartently it was really emotional, which is strange to think about when it involves a giant ape.
Now this has me buzzing! I wonder if there is some parallelism with that and Peter or it has to do with the obvious relationship of Ann and Kong(?)

If you look closer you will notice that Kong is about 10m tall, at least. The CG on Kong is amazing. Better then any digital creature so far.

My reaction to the trailer is that the movie actually looks better than i thought it would. Granted my opinion before seeing the trailer, based on what I had heard, was not all that high. But this has definitely piqued my curiousity.
As for the effects looking wonky; I agree that some of the shots look off. But I wouldn't worry about this too much yet. Very often distributors and studios will force a trailer out of the gate before it's ready just for marketing and timing reasons.

Just out of interest... which effects shots looked off?

The shot I thought looked off is where Kong picks up the yellow car and tosses it. Just something about how he throws looks odd to me. And then the end of the car seems to phase through a couple of pedestrians running across the street as it skids towards camera. Nothing too major.

He doesn't touch the car. That whole shot is way off besides...
The trailer did look much better on the big screen. Can't really say why though, something about the ambience of being in the theater I guess.

I will agree I'm a bit disappointed of the size of the Big K. He just doesn't seem as big as in the original. But perhaps thats just me. Though the sizes weren't that consistent in the original. If you watch it the hand that picks the female up is the same size as the hand that grabs the airplanes whole. We just better see some building climbing or I'll be very upset.

Just so, just so.
PJ has alread ystated the final design of Kong has not yet been decided upon.
Also, for all the naysayers, check out the kong website, production diary "24 weeks to go" - which explains the breakdown of the trailer and the timescles / pressures involved in getting it out. As someone comments, even scenes for the trailer never made it into the trailer.
Bear in mind also, as the diary shows, this is on top of the work they were still trying to do for the film proper.
If you guys can produce better, faster, then get your applications into Weta Digital right now, because they are gonna need you before Xmas arrives!
Those production diaries are a real eye opener to the realities of working on something as big as Kong (pardon the pun ;) ).

Yes, those production diaries are fantastic. It's great for films like LOTR and Kong, which both have large fanbases to involve the fans and let them know how things are going. You really get the feeling PJ's films are made for the fans by someone who cares. Its sad when people with lots of cash ruin good stories to make a quick buck.
i didn't read everything, but any ideas if there is going to be any animatronics in it, or is it all digital?
i liked the blend of both in JP series.
