View Full Version : Brom Girl
Nipper 06-27-2005, 10:16 PM Hi,
I've been working on a model loosely inspired by a Brom painting, and I'd like to share my progress for criticism and feedback. I'm going to post the early versions that I started the beginning of last week and go from there. That way I can see if people agree with the choices that I made along the way.

You could consider making the hips longer, lower the hips such that the wrist coincides with the center area of the groin. Just a suggestion :)

Hi Dom,
I'm not understanding what you mean by making the wrists at the same level as the center of the groin. Can you clarify your suggestion? Do you mean lengthen the hips and the arms?
asfalton-Thank you. I'll post more soon, because I've been working on it since early last week and I've done quite a bit of work since then.

Hi djpenguin,
I'm going to be doing UV layout and texturing over the next few days.
Here are some pics from yesterday morning:

This is what I settled on a little later in the afternoon. The hair is still a rough stand-in but it shows the direction that I would like to go in.

Wow. What a wonderful progress you hav there!
I hav some comments; Are you try to follow the reference painting as close as possible? Well, personally I would comment that you 3D model's propotion is not matching the painting itself that well. Cause she lower body looks "longer" then the upper body, an usual stylization in painting, so that the character looks more cool and elegant. ( just some personal thought, if you see one in real life, its weird)
Anyways, keep it up. Loves to see more.
I'm looking forward to getting this rig into this character Erin. Should be fun. So far I have the spine complete and am working on arms and legs. I'll post something here when I'm closer to final if anyone is interested in the rigging side of this character.

I'm not trying to duplicate the proportions of the woman in the Brom painting. I wanted to do a model of a shorter, sexier girl, that didn't look so much like a race horse. Tall can be sexy, but usually not as feminine. I tried for a more athletic build too, because I like the feminine petite look of a small pelvis and thin waist, rather than huge hips and pelvis as in the Brom painting. Personal preference. :D

I'm looking forward to seeing this girl move, in all kinds of provocative ways. I'm sure that people would like to see it too, as long as it's relevant to a 3d still image. I'll do a final render of her posed when she's all textured and hairy.

I started texturing her last night, so here's my progress so far. I know that I missed the belly button, but I didn't remember to add one. Maybe later when I have more time. She won't be topless much. :)

I haven't read the thread, so excuse if this has been said, but maybe change the title of the post because you have completely went off model, purposely, but at this point I would just call it a Brom inspired model.

Hi daraeill,

Thanks. I'm happy with how the textures are turning out. I'm still working on the hair. I'm going to replace it with S&H soon, and then maybe just texture this low-res hair for a normal mapped model.
Hi Merch,
I tried to change the post topic earlier today and wasn't able to get the post topic to show *nudity*, which I was trying to add so as not to offend the conservative among us. If you know how to change the main topic header let me know. She is certainly a purposeful departure from the original design. I changed the first message in the thread for you, so hopefully you'll feel better about it. :) It might take the involvement of a forum moderator to make that show up in the main topic header though. I don't know.

Hi again,
Here's another update of my progress. I still haven't touched the hair but that's on my list this morning. :)
pixeltroll2005, Neeno, thanks for the encouragement.
I will be able to post some wires next week once I'm back from vacation.
The black dots all over her in the last pic above are from the shadow artifacts. I was in a bit of hurry so I didn't turn up the quality in MR. It's kinda finicky that way. :)

The model is looking cool guys. A couple of comments (mostly my preference....)
I think that although the character is aiming for more of a tom-boy look, maybe its gone a little to far. At the momment I feel her hips are VERY narrow for a woman. You mention a shorter woman being more feminine, well I beleive thats because the shorter bofy length accentuates the hips somewhat and creates the classic hour glass figure. In a taller woman this is often (though not always) diluted as the figure is elongated. In your case the figure suggests it is short-ish, but the super narrow hips are removing a lot of the femine form you suggest you are aiming for. As an example, femal gymnasts are both short and athletic, but (the older ones at least) still have feminine hips.
The second thing is the face. At the momment the combination of very bold lips, low cheek bones and a nose that is tiping downwards seems to combine again to produce a pretty masculine look. I'd consider refining some of the elements, maybe raising the nose tip some, and the cheecks to produce a more finely featured face.
At the momment the changes I'm suggesting would be only subtle. A slight widening of the hips, a slight softening and refining of the facial features. Maybe keep the eyes still pretty hard and steely, so you get a nice combo of both femininity and strength. Dare I say it, but at the momment I'm getting shades of "ladyboy"
Anyway, thats just my opinion.
p.s. (sorta) looking again, MAN those hips are narrow, they even look to narrow for a dude?

I agree with you regarding the hips. I narrowed them and the butt because Paul and other people looking at it thought that the butt was too big. In doing so, I lost the hip bones and made it too narrow. I didn't really notice until another buddy of mine(also a Chris ;)) said something similar. I've seen athletic girls with narrow hips and big shoulders, but they also usually have more prominent hip bones and apparent stomach muscles. If it doesn't screw up Paul's rigging efforts, I'll quickly change the proportions. The mesh structure is there to do the job from before.
Regarding the face, she does have the look of one too many plastic surgeries, but I like it better than the face that I did with the pig tails. I'll tweak it some more, and maybe come up with something a little more feminine. I do want it to be a strong face though, and for it to be somewhat exotic. Not so soft/girl-like, but rather a mature and sexy woman. I must say though, in the rigging render, something looks super weird in her face. It looks like her face is all sucked in and lips puckered. Maybe it's just a camera/render angle thing, but I'll have to get Paul to do another render to do it justice. She's not quite THAT ugly. :)

Yeah, I'd say the combo of having such a thin/honed nose, the large cheek bones, the bee sting lips and the orangey skin tone all kind of contribute to that "I just couldn't leave the knife alone" look? Maybe pull back a little on each of those elements to soften her a bit. I think a lot of character is in the eye's, so its possible to have a softer feminin face and still keep the harder edge via her eyes and her body language/posture. Same for the hips, slightly broader hips and a hint of pelvic bones as you suggested would do the trick.
In terms of lighting, I'd suggest to Paul that maybe he uses some more fill lights from lower angles to make the lighting less harsh. Turn off the spec in those lights to stop the render getting over specular. That softer lighting should show off the model better and also soften her facial features somewhat. Right now the hard lighting is giving her that "Bulldog chewing a wasp" look. Looking foward to seeing an update ;)
If you guys want any help with her textures or lighting, I'd be happy to help out ;)
Cheers
Sorry Erin but I realy didn't spend any time on lighting. Just wanted to get some thing posted. I try for another render today and replace it.
