A mate of mine sent me that not ten minutes ago. You beat me to it. :)
At first I was a little underwhelmed. But then I posed myself the question... 'What exactly did you think a monkey was going to look like?!'
Haha. :D

Umm he looks....errrr...he looks like an ape.
Well....I too held back comment for a few minutes, and then thought about Gollum - I really think that this Kong looks like he may steal the show! I thin they've given him very articualte characteristics, that mixed with what looks like - old age...We could have another fascinating CG character in our midst. If this is the case, I wonder whether that is true to the original, because I have always believed that Kong in the 1933 version is like a big dog, simple minded, and very unaware of the scale of the world and its societies...and all it can think about is survival and its toy - or rather female love....And yet that Kong still stands amazing in its accomplishment, and much more praise is deserved no matter how great this one is, for afterall, in 1933 the character was born frame by frame, picture by picture!

Thats the thing. I'm not entirely sure. There aren't many giant apes to compare it to. So I guess... I guess I though this one might look a little less... um... 'standard ape'... or something.
Still for what it is. It's good.

I'm with leigh on this one, the ape looks like a giant verison of an ape in the wild, you really can't drift to far from that if you want it to be convincing from a realistic perspective. I feel the image of King Kong has a lot of orginal characteristics.
L.Rawlins

A realistic perspective?! It's a giant ape! :D
I just thought they'd distinguish it more as some 'freak-of nature' with the aesthetic, to make it look a little more unique amongst its counterparts. (Ignoring the size. :) )
That's kinda why I thought we had had to wait this long to set eyes upon it.
I understand what you're saying. But why keep us from a 'regular looking' big ape for this long?
Merely for publicity?

Yeah, it's hard for me to get all wound up on this character especially after the work done in Mighty Joe Young. That was I.L.M. wasnt' it? I should know this!
Heh heh, and then someone from WETA pops in! :scream:

Something about the facial expression!

I think it looks like those pig based creatures out of return of the jedi.
Something about the nose.
Can't wait to see the animation though.

I've got a joke...
Q: What do you call a Gorilla dressed in a suit and carrys a machine gun?
A: "Sir". BOM-BOM! :D
I have to say though, that Kong looks like an old bloke who's had jobs such as nightclub-bouncer, French Forgien Legionare and Baptist( Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels... ) during his younger days... :eek!:

Errr what did you guys think a giant ape was going to look like? :)I actually expected it to have specular highlights on the muzzle. Most shots of "great apes" I've seen show a shiny, or wet muzzle.

I really think that this Kong looks like he may steal the show!
He doesn't even look as convincing as Mighty Joe Young, and that was 7 years ago.
That was I.L.M. wasnt' it?
ILM and Dreamquest split the work on that film. Both did absolutely incredible CG work on that film. The CG ape was indistinguishable from the animatronic.

What about the Dino's? J.Park came out... Count 'um. 12 YEARS AGO now! And they look way better than the ones in Kong.
I'm guessing that those aren't final comps for the trialer? The grading to almost pure gray really made them stand out from the plates.
I'm sure it'll look amazing on film though.

I take it back.
That looks AMAZING. Damn you quicktime with your compression.
Have to say I was totally blown away by those two images.
The one of Kong feels like a painting, shouldn't really fit but I love it.
Can't wait for this now. Bring it on!

No wonder Weta have the 99th fastest Super-Computer, look at all that fur!
The Kong image is my new wallpaper, and will be for quite some time. He looks amazing.
You can really see the kind nature in him, I'm lost in his eyes... and I don't feel gay or weird at all...

i'm sorry I don't see where WETA's Kong is supremely differant than that of the ape in the
Might Joe Young Movie.
His back was gray as well.
I was hoping they would advance the technology in that regards.

You know, I am really going out on a limb here, but maybe, just maybe, it's because they're both apes
/sarcasm
What, were you expecting Weta to make a bright pink ape with a dolphins face? Why are people complaining that Kong looks like a ape? HE IS AN APE.
Needless to say, there are some differences anyway - Kong has more hair, and a rather different nose structure. Looks like some people just enjoy nitpicking.

Well, besides the fact both are giant gorillas, what were you expecting? Of course they look alike .
Also, I donīt believe the point is to make their Kong " supremely differant " than anything, but make him better : better animated, better rendered, and a better character overall. To check that, Iīm afraid weīll have to wait for the film...
I surely will. I was missing my yearly Weta dose! http://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
