View Full Version : FX Animator / TD available in Los Angeles
fxanimator 10-21-2002, 08:38 PM Hello,
I am CG artist located in Santa Monica, CA . I am proficient in Maya.
I started with Wavefront software 9 years ago (if anybody remembers now Advanced Visualiser or Dynamation or Explore or Composer). Since that time I have managed to explode, turn into dust and blow by wind, melt and sink in water, set on fire and cover with smoke a lot of different things. I seek perfection in the area of particle system simulations, soft and rigid body dynamics. But ... tough times ... CG artist needs to be able to do almost everything now from low poly modeling to administrating IRIX on SGI computer and setting up PC render farms. So I try to keep my skills up to date to be able to perform effectively in the different areas of CG. Now I have a lot of time in my hands to mess around with Houdini to make it another instrument in my arsenal. I hope I have managed to reflect my various abilities in my demo reel and resume.
Please visit my web site at www.fxanimator.com

Hi Konstantin,
You're doing exactly the kind of work I'd like to be doing myself. However, I don't have access to the type of footage that lends itself to effects like that.
My question is: How do you get a job doing that type of FX work? What kind of demo reel do you do in a case like that? Come up with some stuff in the back yard using a video camera maybe?

Regarding source footage. Obviously I did not shoot it in my back yard ;) All video presented in my reel is from commercials , TV shows and some movies I did CG for while working at Planet Blue (http://www.planetblue.com) company in Santa Monica, CA. And my reel was almost pure CG 4 years ago. Nowadays I would probably use DV camera with good tripod and learning editions of Maya or Houdini. You will have restricted video quality due to compression and cheap optics, restricted resolution and some sort of watermark or logo in frame due to non-commercial edition of software. But it is at least something to work with.

Santa Monica? Is that near Venice or Hollywood?
I'm thinking of applying to places near either of those cities and I was curious if you had any recommendations of a good place to live around there.

Did you see that Electronic arts was looking for an FX artist for the Lord of the Rings game ??
Your website is incredibly slow BTW I would change providers if I was you ..

Thanks Magic Pen. That was ad from guys at Redwood City EA office. EA has couple offices in LA area as well. I am working on it. ;) It is kind of slow and delicate process. My hosting providers could have down time ones in a while, but they performed very well about month ago when I had thousands hits per day from the ad at insidecg.com
To NanoGator: Santa Monica is closer to Venice. Nice place to live  if you do not mind very high rent and a lot of bums on the streets. :surprised

Hey man,
TALK TO ESC!
Friend who works there says they are desperately looking for good FX guys! Hugest growing sector in film effects right now, if you know your stuff (and you obviously do), you should really talk to them.

Hi noisewar !
Do you know ways around ESC HR department ? I already have standard postcard from them saying something like (in my interpretation): "Tape received. Sit still. We'll call you if we need you" . E-mails to them with same result. It was a month ago. Happy X-mas and New Year ! Everybody (everything) is slow now.

Hey send them a reminder, but they are all sweating bullets right now (as you can imagine). I'll ask my friend to put in a word for you if he can, but no promises. I did see your stuff and it's certainly up to snuff, though I'm no judge, and I think this is just a tough time. I wish you the best of luck, like someone else said, if you can't get in, who can? Best wishes!

Hey fxanimator,
sucks but, you sort of have to know someone in the company, but I did get a comment that it would more desirable if you had some Mental Ray experience, and that putting Unix Scripting on your resume looks like you are looking for entry-level positions. Now on the otherhand, if you had simply said "I know PERL" that would look great for your TD position. Their pipeline is pretty much set, so PERL and MR are solid things they look for.
Anyways, keep that in mind, and good luck.
