Hi
I like using water color but in my opinion it's good for middle to far distance model as suggesting is the keyword of this technique. (maybe i'm wrong...)
Now I'd like to paint a portrait but i don't know what technique to use to get the best results. As I paint in my free time (and I don't have much of it...) i don't want to waste my time testing all the differents techniques, so i'm listening to your comments
Thanks

There is really no such thing as best technique or medium to use. It's all up to the individual. Some people use watercolor, some use oil, some use charcoal, some use airbrush, some use gouache. Some start with a sketch, some start with color and shapes, some finish one area and then move to the next, some work on the entire image gradually. It's up to you to find your own way. There is no right way.

Hi Madpear,

I agree with Lunatique. There is no best way or right way to paint a portrait. It is entirely up to you how you want to paint it.

This is a good thing to do and I recommend it frequently:

Open a large white Canvas and test each brush category's variants from the top of the list to the bottom, just to get an idea of what's available in the default brush variants. Make notes when you find something you like. Make notes when you have questions.

I do understand, though, that it helps a lot to see other artists' work and learn how they created it. With the combination of having tested all of Painter's brush variants at least once, then learning what other artists use to get the results you see and like, will give you a big boost toward working independently and getting your own satisfying results.

Two forums where artists display their paintings and are more than happy to discuss their techniques and Painter brush variants used are:

In Depth Arts' Painter Can - 2D Studio forum (http://www.indeptharts.org/)

Wet Canvas! Digital Art Forum (http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?forumid=33)

In both of these forums, the members use Painter and other programs, so when you post your message, be sure to specifiy the program you're using.

The level of talent and Painter expertise of these artists varies widely from expert to intermediate, to beginner. However, the technical information they share can still be helpful in any case as you'll see a wide variety of styles, Painter brush variants, and combinations of brush variants used in their work.

Good luck!

For what it's worth...
I've found the airbrush feature to be better for coloring and blending options when it came to coloring in my pencil sketches on Corel.
I did a brush test on a white canvas surface and found I had better "control" with the airbrush then any other besides watercolor and sumi (but those were lanscape scenes no people)
I use a mouse at the moment, so don't take my comments too seriously. :D
