CGTalk - Trax type layout

I'd like to create a layout through Mel much like the trax editor but I'd like to import custom files into it. This might sound like a very newbie question (i.e. not that simple). It might be simmillar to asking for the solution to world peace.
But if anyone could point me toward the right direction, it would be extremely useful.
