View Full Version : More Armour
Fritz3D 02-18-2002, 10:29 PM These were done as an excercise for speed...the thing was that for 3 days I had to do 3 tanks - light, medium and heavy...so there they are; all done from scratch, only a few minor parts imported, but they share some parts between each other...; first time I used Unwrap UVW, and did real texturing so to say...good results for a first try I think...most time obviously I spent with the Heavy tank :D but that's me :D
Please comment, but do have in mind that they were done for a short amount of time, and obviously have many flaws...:)

Are the tank tracks made with path deforms?
Great tanks.

Not exactly...the path deform distorts the objects at the rounded places; I use just path as a position controller; more tedious, but better result IMO...

Hey they look pretty good. Have you ever tried using the TruGrit plugin from Snotmonster? (http://www.snotmonster.com/)
You should check it out. It might help you out with your texturing. I actuallly like the textures how they are, but this is a pretty nifty plugin that you might have use for. The only other suggestion I would make would be to chamfer some of those sharp edges. Good stuff though, man.

TrueGrit I tried once, but I didn't like the result, I guess my mesh wasn't quite ok then...
These machines will be finished, with real texuture maps, and more detail, so far this was a speed excercise, but now I can tweak them as I met my "deadline" ;)

Am I right in assuming that vehicle models, unless perfect, are of little interest to this board? I'm not bashing or anything, I just think that everyone here is much more interested in character modelling...not that I consider my models rather good or interesting, but I see almost all other vehicle models threads die quickly as well, that's why I'm asking...:)
it's probably that we see so much vehicles that they become mundane.

...maybe....but for all the time I spent browsing new images on all the sites I've been to I'd say I've seen very few tank images for instance, only on dedicated sites as TankClub.ru. On 3DArtists for instance you won't find a single tank image. There seems to be very little interest at all.
...and I am trying to do my best to fill the gap  ;)

I think it's a matter of appeal. I like tanks, and those are some kickass tank models. I would probably enjoy super-space tanks with hydrogen cooled plasma cannons more than historical tanks, but that is no reflection of your praticular imagery ^^
Getting back to appeal... funny, evil, disgusting.... characters have much more room for appeal in general.
The world needs kickass tank models too though, you do us a service! :D

I'm doing my best :D
Now I have a few free days, so there might be updates soon :)
I only hope there is interest....

Cool, I like em. They are like cartoony WW2 German tanks, stylewise. Textures are basic but effective. Nice work!

Hello Fritz, good to see some interesting new tank meshes- reminds me of some of the 30s era Soviet T24s or possibly T26.
I am also a fan of the riveted steel plates; something which adds the tough strength image of classic industrial technology.

Ok, it's back...obviously I am going over the limit of allowed bandwidth...I'll have to do something about that

A small update, but still work on textures and maybe little more detail is necessary. It's not intended to be super-detailed however.

I'm trying to do some more complex texturing, as that of the side armour on this pic:

I need comments and suggestions to make all better...
