View Full Version : 3d for Linux?
epsilion 10-21-2002, 05:16 PM 3D is kind of just something i like to play with, but i really love it...
I was thinking about buying Maya 4.5 for linux, but 2000 is a lot of cash and they dont have a student edition or ple.
im a cs major and i really want to start working in a non-windows environment... i mean i have nothing against it, its just all i know and id like to have more experience in other areas. id love irix, but i dont think thats an option.. linux is pretty much free.
what other good 3d programs are available for linux, under 1000 ... i like mayas working environment a lot so something similar to that with a good renderer would be nice.. i just cant seem to find anything but maya thats non-windows
any input would be good...

Maya does have a student edition. I'm not sure if they've got it for linux, but check it out at JourneyEd.com

Maya PLE only exists for Windows & Mac. Not too sure about the student license either...
SoftimageXSI runs under Linux as well, but you won't get the full version anywhere near US$1000. They do have their student version available on Linux according to a demo person that I talked to at a 3d show three month ago. I think it was around US$800 plus a yearly 'maintenance cost' the years following that of the purchase.
Lightwave will come out with a Linux free render node sometime this quarter, a full version is rumored to come out with the next major release.

maybe i should go gnu and use some free modelers/renderers?
i looked through the forums and saw a program called wings 3d?
anyone else use this? might be too hard after being spoiled with maya though...

There is no Maya PLE for Linux, but you can get both Maya Complete and Maya Unlimited for Linux as student versions. check here.

XSI doesn't seem to have Linux student versions or a Linux Experience version, at least not that I can find.
Houdini has an awesome free version for Linux. It has almost no limitations (just a tiny watermark, proprietary save format, and limits to 640x480 rendering), it actually runs better on Linux than Windows, and it's a tiny download. It's identical to the full version commercial customers use other than those few limits.

Here's some Houdini related links, since it's not the easiest software to learn.
First, you can always gt the latest version here. They are constanly updating and releasing new versions. Current latest build is 5.5.143, but it seems like they have a couple new releases a week. Go to the "Production Releases" section, register yourself, and get the version for your particular OS.
http://www.sidefx.com/dls/index.html
Inside the help menu in Houdini is a very large PDF file full of tutorials. You may need to additionally get Houdini scenes available here to work through the PDF.
http://www.sidefx.com/community/
The Sidefx community site has a couple other small tutorials and demo files, plus the official forums which are frequented by SideFX staff members, and some professionals at some big production houses. There is also a user mailing list you can subscribe to and a mail list archive you can dig through.
Odforce.net has even more tutorials and forums, and some really interesting downloads.
http://www.odforce.net
If you don't have the full version of Houdini Apprentice, you can order it from SideFX for 10 bucks (it'll probably be an old build), but disc 2 contains several hours worth of tutorial videos. You can also get these videos here:
http://www.vislab.usyd.edu.au/sidefx/
or here
http://www.ip-dot-uk.com/apprentice/start_here.html
Both 3D World and CGI World are running issues this month and next month that feature Houdini on the cover disc along with video tutorials not yet available elsewhere. Again, the builds will be older than what's available on SideFX's site
Also Visual Paradigms is another Houdini site with news, tutorials and forums. They are converting and uploading the tutorial vids in DIVX, so you may want to check them out. They have additional tutorials and videos as well.
http://www.visualparadigms.com/houdini/index.php
Other people are also converting the videos to Quicktime and possible TechSmith, so go back to the official Side FX community forums to find out when and where they will be available.
Techimage has some additional beginner tutorials:
http://www.techimage.co.uk/tc/products/houdini/houdini_tutorials.html
Lastly, City University of Hong Kong has lecture notes for various high end software packages including PRMan, Maya and Houdini here:
http://cade.scope.edu/lnotes.html
The Houdini related stuff is here:

I almost forgot...
www.3Dbuzz.com
They haven't started yet, and haven't opened a forum yet, but 3D Buzz announced they are in a sponsorship agreement with SideFX. 3D Buzz will soon start producing monthly Houdini Video Training Magazines you can order or download for free as well as a free online classroom with tutorials and homework if you are interested.
