View Full Version : hardware accelerated rendering???
So i finally bit the bullet and bought myself a new high end 3D Workstation for XSI :) . I got a Nvidia Quadro FX 4400 video card with the computer. In XSI there is rendering setting for Open GL accelerated rendering. I was wondering if anyone has any info on how this works. According to the Mental Images Website Mental Ray supports Open GL accelerated Rendering, but there isn't any real details of how it works. I seem to remember seeing a video on the softimage website a while ago stating there is a 5% speed increase with the Open GL accelerated Rendering, does anyone else remember seeing this video too?

it delegates to the videocard some tasks like ordering and sorting polygons and computation of the shading work done by metashaders.
it won't change your life, and in most cases it will not make much of a difference, especially when the focus is on few items with complex shading, but in some others it can help a fair bit (simply shaded crowds is one of them).
be ready for a marginal loss in precision during the sorting process on small scale scenes with long clipping and small objects inside an extended clipping range.
