View Full Version : Sounds simple but i'll be damned if i can get it to work!
doug_ 10-21-2002, 12:41 PM Hi i was wondering if i could get some ideas on how to execute this problem.Basically i want a light(1) to shine through a semi-transparent/translucent material and project the pattern onto the far wall(3). Sounds fairly easy but i'll be buggered if i can get it to work. i have faked it by getting the light to project a similar image at the same time, but i really want it to work in a practical sense as it would in the real world.
Thanks for your time and listening to my rant, and many huge thanks if someone can concieve a solution!!!!

did u try raytraces shadows?
If you add a projector map to your light source you can achieve what you want to do.
Look in your max help files.

Fede, he will still need raytraced shadows in order for the light to pass through a transparent or semi-transparent object, but aside from that your suggestion is sound.

Fozzie, you are right, but i think that with the projector map in the light source he will not actually need the semi transparent object. If you look at the pic attached you will see what he is trying to do and i don't think that he actually needs that plane.
I suugest he plays with the shadow settings as we don't know how blured or sharp he needs them.

Fede, i specifically do not want to use a projection on the light. i mentioned that by way of "i tried faking it but want it to really work" . i will try raytraced shadows and see how i go, thanks fellas!

Solution
1. Shadow Raytracing set on the light
2. Use a raytrace material with txtmap in transp map
3. Faking a volume light effect on the other side might make for a nice accent.
I did a test for you to prove that it can be done.
I can email you the test file if you need it.
