Had a question for you all. I've been working in Sub D for a model. I was merging all the vertices together after I converted the object from Sub D to poly mode. When I went back to convert the poly to a sub d the wing part didnt come out right...when i started with a plane it was fine...after i connected now its got wholes in it...??? what can i do to correct it? thanks.

That usualy happens to me when there are a lot of seperate objects combined into one, merging all the vertices with a tight setting fixes it for me. If that doesn't work look closely at a problem edge and make sure there's only one edge and vertex on each connection.

look under display>custom polygon display...check border edges and set width to something like 8 or 10...now you can see exactly what isnt merged...merge verts...when converting from subD's to polys set the tesselation method to vertices...that way there wont be any screwy geometry changes that maya sometimes decides is "best" when you let it make the choice

well i know each vertices is merged correctly so i know its not that...it has to be something else...i just dont know...any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

Can you check the hypergraph for us to make sure it's just one node?

is that what you needed? thanks again for the help

I've been trying to mimic the situation and I haven't been able to create anything that isn't fixed with merge vertices. Sorry, I'm stumped. Try running edit polygons/normals/conform. You can pm me the file if you want, but I'd understand why you wouldn't want to do that.

i'll have to send it to you later cuz im rendering another file right now..but i dont have a problem sending it over...its just a wing ;p

Ok, here you go. You had some bad nonmanifold geometry and
polygon/cleanup with nonmanifold geometry turned on
wasn't fixing it for some reason. I separated
it and it broke up into about 40 pieces. Then I combined the pieces
into the arm and three webs and deleted all history and parents. I
ran cleanup and merge vertices on each thing individually then
combined one web with the arm running cleanup and merge vertices
on the new object, combined another web running cleanup and merge vertices
on the new object, combined the last web running cleanup and merge vertices
on the new object. When stuff like this happens your last resort is
to take it apart and build it back as clean as possible. Good luck
with the rest of it.
