Title: Roll Out
Name: Dak Marcus Phoenix
Country: USA
Software: Maya, mental ray, Photoshop
I wanted to transition to Maya for quite some time and finally got around to doing it this year.
This is my first significant project to apply Maya skills in a still scene. The plane took about 2-3 weeks and is composed of mostly NURBS surfaces (later converted to polygon). The buildings took longer than I hoped (about a week) because an early draft was too "clean." Now I have made them less attractive and dirtier.
However, due to time constraints, I had to paint in the men with Photoshop.
Scene Description:
A reliable old YF-07 Fulcrum undergoes maintenance inspections.

nice render  i love the texturing on the ship although it may use some specular/reflection in my opinion but great work none the less.

Nice. The picture has great feel but there are some flaws in it. The sky is too blury I think you used a low res image. I dont know but some of the people in the scene look artificial, like they are added to it.
Keep up the good work

A YF-07? I only remember a YF-12A... It looks amazing though. Cool render!

wow...it's excellent!!love it all.:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
The ground tiles have a dirt inconsistent. The dirt must cross the tiles boundaries.
Attach all tiles and texture the new object.

Man this really brings me back to the good ol' days of Robotech and Macross. Really good work, to me it looks like an exact cell taken from a macross movie! But I know that this is original. Good work!

Thanks a lot for the feedback. It was quite helpful in some cases.
Sqwall- I did not notice that until you pointed it out. It does not appear much in the original 3300 render so I assume it is related to the jpg compression? In any case, I went back and manually blurred away some of that.
Bao2- You are correct but there are 2 problems:
a. Texture tiling makes the ground monotonous and repetitive especially with dirt spots.
b. Stretching the texture looks poor for high resolution closeups.
fx81- Yes I actually decreased specular from early drafts. Typically military aircraft paint schemes minimize shine in order to be less visible by air. Some feature more reflective lower sides so as to blend in with the sky against ground sighting. That is the paint scheme I used: semi-reflective in some parts but largely flat. This is the old "incandescent object" reflectivity test:

m@lonet - Here are some quick pics from WIP. I will do better renders of it soon (hopefully).

That reminds me, I never did finish that joystick...

I love the plane. It's a very creative design. The image is well-lit, good job. I agree with Sqwall, work on the sky some more. It doesn't feel connected to the rest of the image.
