View Full Version : WIP Creatures,Cel Shades, and Pirates

Figured I'd introduce myself here with a few images of some of stuff I've been noodling around for the past few weeks while on break.

The closest comparision that I can make with my style is Disney/Burton/Henson then again I'm not sure if that makes it unique or not.

I just call it stuff. =)

Some of it is old stuff from a few years back (like the cel shaded piece and the Characters from my story) while others are renders from yesterday (The Conversation/Pirates).

I've included other shots of my cast of characters below in the high resolution link portion of this post if you are so inclined to look at it as well as high resolution versions of all the images visible here.

Thanks for spending the time to look at it and I hope you guys like it!

gosh realy amazing stuff you have there

Thanks. I really love doing characters, especially ones that convey emotion through design and just overall silliness, if its applicable. =)

Its fun stuff to do but people have been telling me I should probably get back to doing the "photoreal" look since its what is generally considered in right now, and it seems like it'd be fun to try to play around with some more and see what I can make of it...hahaha then again its an excuse to play more with zbrush at the end, I guess.... (but I'll still be making those crazy characters who dig trenches with pitchforks and pickaxes in my skull until the day I die...they won't let me work otherwise...)

Hi Rockmanex, some fine works you have there;) The cell shaded examples are really strong... sorta MAXX izzzzz little critters... I'm not sure what it is but the pirate characters renders don't quite do it for me... I've got a feeling that it's the lighting and specular levels... But in all a great look in at what is clearly an artist having a great time in 3d... Looking forward to seeing more from you:thumbsup:

Haha! Thanks...

Yeah the Pirates are kinda "resiny" right now... though in some odd way I like it at the moment...May try some advanced stuff with them down the line

I absolutely love the ECU (not sure what that stand for Ectoplasmic Containment Unit? ) I really want to see where that is going. The look should not be compared to either of those. It is distict. It may have some influence of all of them, but it is not overt and you would have to make a big jump to say it was in the style of one of them. You can safely say it is your own pitchfork digging style. Great work, don't let it go. And as for photoreal stuff, pfft I say! I like 3D for cartoons and comics better. Don't get me wrong the photoreal stuff knocks my socks off. But I can't imagine any of the photoreal humans talking and maintaing beleivability. As a still 3D image they look extremely close to real, but any movement and the illusion becomes almost impossible to maintain. If I am wrong I would be happy to look at some work and eat my words. Stick to what you want to do. It will lead you to where you want to be.

I came here because of your post about frustration with the lack of comments on work on another thread. I too get frustratedwhen I post stuff and don't get feedback (I haven't posted any WIP here yet because I am still in the early phases and almost everything here kicks ass hard, including your stuff). But when I do I hope people here rip it apart to make it better.

When I find the time and have something to say, I try to give critiques. Even though I may not be the most qualified, I figure it can't hurt.

On to the crtique. In the pirate work the legs seem a little too long. I know that it is a cartoon and there can be exaggeration, but I have trouble imagining them walking or where there knees would be.

I also can't figure out Usopp by just looking at him. This is not a bad thing, but if you are going for a specific look, I am not seeing it. Also, his goggles don't seem to have the weight or tension necessary to keep them attached to his head. It seems like they would wobble about and not stay in place.

Well that is my 4 cents. (It was a semi-long post)

Not much of an update to this thread but a turntable...
Hopefully the link will work. (there is a clipping error on the back of one of the chars)

Otherwise I have it on a rapidshare link, but you have to work through all their ad jargon to see it.

I like The Oohpz, got character

I'm still loving them. It is so great to see the characters you make come alive in the 3rd dimension.

So what is next? I can't wait to see more.
