Hi, I'm very new to 3D, but I've wanted to get involved in it for a while now. I used to do some tinkering with Grand Theft Auto 3 models when that first came out, but nothing ever serious. Now, I have finished (well I say finished, even though I'm certain its a ways off still) with my first real model.

Here's the lone reference photo I have been using:

Here's my model, if you guys think of a specific view that would show better how it is displayed, let me know and I'll post it.

I think I've done a pretty good job, and i'm still new to it, but I can take criticism very well, so please give me anything that can actually help me become a better modeller and make this model better.

I did it in Blender, mainly because it's free and this is just a hobby right now.

Oh yeah, I wanted to get some suggestions about the hair. Right now it is adding many polygons when it shouldn't, I'm not exactly certain what the best way to approach it would be. I am thinking it might be best to use two triangles for each strand, and have them be perpendicular to eachother. I dunno, help me.

Also, I tried to eliminate as many triangles as possible, from what I've read in the past this is bad; although, I have no clue as to why it is bad to have triangles instead of quads.

Maybe this is the wrong forum for this?

Hey man as a learner myself im gonna give you a few tips. First I would suggest searching these forums and reading some topology discussions and get a handle on how the surface should flow on a humanoid type charater. Second google search for some face modeling tutorials to learn the basics of how to make faces cus I noticed that yours(good for a starter) needs some more work. Also pay attention when modeling living things, that there are underlying muscles and bones that make up the shape of the body and should definetly be taken into consideration when creating live beings. For that you should search the web for some anatomy to get the general idea of how muscles should look. and lastly try to keep an even polygon distribution over the model , for example: the left arm is loaded with polys and the right are has next to none. It makes a difference when rigging.

good luck dude and dont give up. The learning can take a while but youll get there:) .

Thanks, I did notice when I tried to move some parts around, the polygons all got out of whack and maybe following the muscles better, it would result in fewer problems like this.

I've been reading plenty of the tutorials and looking at various things in the forums here as well as other anatomy websites. I'm absolutely certain that a lot of great modelling has to do with experience, and I expect to get better as I move on.

I should maybe come back to this because it is certain that at its current start, it will be nearly impossible to rig am I correct? I should maybe start over with some machines or other mechanical things before moving to living things?

I'm just eager to see quick results, when that probably isn't the best way to approach it.

For sure you will definetly get better as you progress. Looking at what others have done tho helps speed things up a bit and maybe avoid some of the mistakes they made. I started with some non organic models first like a sword and a helmet but I dont know if its the best way its just the way i did it. Im currently working on my first character model right now so im kinda learning right along with you. You can see her at this thread http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=251949. I too am eager for the end result I cant wait till I am able to do some good CG.
