Inspired Character Animation (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1931841489/qid=1035157516/sr=2-2/ref=sr_2_2/104-9694546-8222330)
This is a pretty nice book and I plan to buy it when I can afford it. As far as setups are concerned, I have never seen a GREAT book on it. Many touch the subject but no one really gives you the best way to do it in Maya. Some day I want to make a tutorial of a really good character setup, but It will take a month or so out of my life. Then I'm not sure if people will really understand it, Im not a teacher.
You can do some searches on character rigging here and at Highend3D.com. There should be enough to get you started.

If it is a course. Where?
I learned Character Rigging @ AAC In San Francisco.
But 1500 dollars a class is going to make me nothing but poor for the rest of my life. Even if I do get a good job.

Whaddup? I recently ordered the "Learning Maya - Character Rigging and Animation" book / cdrom from Alias/Wavefront and was very very impressed. Not only did it lead you through step-by-step on rigging a character, it also addressed the best way to go about it depending on your model and the cdrom has a video for each and every chapter in the book.
The guy on the cdrom sounds like a character that belongs on a saturday morning cartoon but it's still pretty good. I think the cdrom / book was only $79. I needed it to work on a project that I had a month to complete and had never rigged a character before. It went smooth as buttttaaah.

have at it.
