I'm in :)

The Game: James Bond-esque Spy game, will think of a name later.

The 'Crate': A 'normal' briefcase. Comes in different varieties, some contain documents, some contain equipment like laptops, weapons, medipacks, and some might just go bang...

Concept Sketches: (later, when I've done some..., you can imagine a briefcase though I should think)

Haha, it's the good old mystery crate thing, delivered James Bond style. I like it when you don't know if you should risk it for the health, or if the crate will take off the last bit of health you have left.

You know what'd be really cool? If NPC's could carry them. "Here you go, Mr. Bond."

Are the briefcases going to open?

I reckon so, they'll just be lying around, and you walk up to and open them.

Progress shots soon...

Render 1b (http://www.pyro-net.com/3d/CGComp/UGAMC2/CaseRender_01b.jpg)

Currently 580 tris, still a lot to go, but I can also lower the detail a bit too to get some more, we'll see.

Render 2g (http://www.pyro-net.com/3d/CGComp/UGAMC2/CaseRender_02g.jpg)

Any suggestions on anything to add/delete/edit?
Hmm, roughly 1010 tries ATM, I can probably get that down a bit.

EDIT:
Just by deleting a few polies it's now down to 930 tris :D

It looks a lot like a high poly model at the moment. And I think you put too much emphasis on the detailing of the little locks and handle. They should be way less polies. Overall I would say you should be able to this case with around 200/300 polies max, without most people seeing the difference.

Remember, its a background object, so there is not need to put a lot of polies in things like handles and locks. They can be made interesting with the texture.

You could optimize the case, and use the spare polies to make the inside of the case more interesting. Or make the case totally beaten up, and strap an atomic device on in the inside or something.

Good luck!

I dunno man, i did a quick number crunch of your first render shot and came up with about 200+ tris... lets see a wire..

with the handle added and what not i'd give it at MOST 500 for that breifcase.. but maybe im missing something

edit: oh you beveled the edges...

take off ALL bevels.. you wont see em in game.. especially a game like james bond they wont stand around to look at the nice beveled edges ;)

Yeah, this always happens, I make a simple looking mesh yet end up using an insane amount of tris getting there .

ah excellent, should be easy enough to clean up/fix up :) Like I said all you gotta do is get rid of all the bevels and wa bam, your great to go! because ya, apart fromt he bevels its a nicely modeled breifcase :) and should work really well.

Thanks for the tips, now down to 700 odd tris, I had to keep the bevel round the middle to define the split, other than that they're all gone, and I really think it hasn't made any difference visually :D

3b (http://www.pyro-net.com/3d/CGComp/UGAMC2/CaseRender_03b.jpg)

I can do what I wanted to do inside now, thanks again

EDIT:
If you want to see the difference, click the 3a or b pic, then change the 3 to a 2 in the address bar, then use the back and forward arrows to flick between them.

Last one for tonight:

4a (http://www.pyro-net.com/3d/CGComp/UGAMC2/CaseRender_04a.jpg)

Any more ideas on what should go in? I tried modelling the pen holder in the lid but decided to texture it instead, the blue/grey thing is a calculator, I was thinking of putting a gun in there but it might eat the reast of my polies if it's going to look right.

That's looking very good, and cleanly executed

798 tris now, I may model the pen holder afterall, unless anyone has any other ideas?...

I still vote for a nuclear device of some kind ;)

I would place a ticking time bomb in it with a timer and wires and dynomite.

Yeah, that could be one variation. This is just the base 'crate' like I said, there are different types containing different things, such as info, weapons, explosives, health, armour and so on.

6e (http://www.pyro-net.com/3d/CGComp/UGAMC2/CaseRender_06e.jpg)

Added the combination locks, cigar case and little logo thingy, boosting the tri count to around 978 (I think). The textures and bump maps are all seperate at the moment. I'll call him something like Rob Royal, just so I can have the fancy double 'r' logo :D

just in case you havnt already, make those combo locks 10 sided cylinders at the MOST heh.

also some of those sheets on the inside dont need to be modeled, just texture them directly to the breif case :)

Maybe it's Ritchie Rich! Looks good Pyro.

Yeah, if I had to make it as low poly as possible I would, but I have 1000 polies to play with, so I might as well use them ;)
