View Full Version : Quick fluid FX question
jdonnelly 06-22-2005, 06:14 PM I'm using fluid effects to create fire, but I have no idea which attribute makes the fire taper at the top. As of now it just keeps flying straight up.
Anyone know which attributes make it taper? Thanks

Maybe try opening one of the sample files, and have a play with them...

you can use the turbulence that comes with the emmiter, or in this case you can play with the temperature turbulence this will give you the flame behavior...

You may want to check the incandescence(?sp) ramp on the fluid itself. The presets Duncan made go up as high as 20 for the right hand [point]. This blows out the color past white to yellow, orange, red and black ( I think...). Turbulence is indeed something to check, both in the fluid and the emitter. A quick solution is to change the dropoff type of the fluid under the Shading category of Contents Details. Sphere is usually the best for fire, although making a long line of fire leans more toward cube. There really are a million and 10 combinations of settings to achieve a certain look, you really should play with the presets - excellent learning tool. If that is too much, I wrote a tutorial a while back that basically goes into the flame.ma example and a little past it - available here --> http://www.zgrachan.com/pages/intro.htm. Hope that helps.

Hey Zach,
I did your tutorial and now when I go to render, under the SHADING section in the attribute editor in Dropoff shape, when I render there is always a soft sphere that glows even beyond where the flames reach to.
I tried different shapes and turning up the transparency and setting edge dropoff to 1, but when I make it more transparent.. the flames are more transparent as well.
Can I resize the dropoff shape or something? If it weren't there, then the flames would be perfect right now.
Thanks, and awesome tutorial!

Hey, it looks like by adjusting the opacity chart under SHADING seemd to fix the problem. I was able to reduce the size of the glowy sphere by adjusting some of the points and/or deleting them in the chart.
