Just wanted to know if I'm doing this right or is there any other way or tool to model this.
I just noticed that if I have a object and I wanted to make part of it rounded and certain parts
sharp I have to add some subdivision at the edges, is this normal? I was trying to select the
edges and use shift-E to sharpen them but it would not render as smooth. I guess what
I'm asking is "Am i doing this right?"

i dont know if my idae will help you (dependes on your goal) but here it is:
instead of using the subsurf button you can (in edit mode) select the parts that you want to get round and then use smooth subdivision (in edit mode press w and then 3) to make them smooth.

secont idea:
press set smooth and then auto smooth to make your object smooth only in some angles.

The important thing to note is that "doing it right" is relative.

You can accomplish the same thing in a variety of ways, so "right" is really what's easiest for you, or what's best for the current project / circumstances. Incidentally, how you're doing it is how I do it too. ;)

Personally there are two ways I do it, usually: one is to add divisions using the knife tool, and the other is to create blocky geometry and then bevel the edges of all of it at once. The bevel tool is really wonderful; it works sometimes better than that of commercial software. Give 'er a try.
