Radiosity+ raytrace material

I just got my hands on MAX v5 and one of the first things that I wanted to check out was the radiosity solution.
I used in my scene a raytrace material (just for the floor, the other materials were standard) and it was calculated – the effect was visible in the viewport, but in the renderings the floor was completely black, though the light reflected from it had some influence on the surrounding. I haven’t found in the user reference a single thing about any conflicts between raytrace material and radiosity. If I set the radiosity to not active the floor is shown normally in the scanline render.
Is it something wrong in the way I’m doing it or the radiosity doesn’t handle raytrace material.

:hmm:

i guess u'd better first check if ambient is all back
if now u can try add a adv.lighting override material on ur raytrace material, that may work
good luck

hey dude,
first of all sign up at the max forums here...
www.support.discreet.com
i was just lounging there and found a similar gripe as you have.
i think you are supposed to use a raytraced material in the reflection slot instead.or use a blend material with raytrace material as the second material.
the support confirmed it as a bug them selves sooo...

I’m surprised that this bug came up after the release of the product. It would be one the first things I would check out as a tester.
Also Autodesk Viz 4 used the same technology – was there a bug as well?

I found out how to go around this problem.
The ambient color for a material must be locked with the diffuse col.
What is interesting that radiosity calculates the scene using diffuse but during render it shows the ambient color.
Try to build a scene with all materials with ambient color set to black (0,0,0). The result I get is a completely black screen.
