View Full Version : Vlam - Strange Attractors
Exper 06-21-2005, 06:30 PM I've seen that Vlam (Strange Attractors free renderer) was cited just a couple of times.
It's really strange cos it's free and it provides some interesting and creative FXs.
Some simple example:

Vlam Example 2 (http://exper.3drecursions.com/vlam/vlam_example_2.mov)

Looks cool. Is there some documentation on how to set it up?
Cheers.

Thanks policarpo. ;)
Describing what a "Flame3" Strange Attractor type can do it's like answering to the famous "One Million Dollar" question.
If you want know something more about "Flame3" Strange Attractor, then take a look here:
Flame3 (http://3drecursions.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=34) and then Flame3 for Mac OSX (http://3drecursions.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=100).
You'll find there all the links you need (hoping).
You can eventually register there and ask for more help: it's a dedicated place to talk about Strange Attractors and related stuffs.
Last but not least... did you took a look at the DF's Flows?

Some little more explanations about the examples.
Vlam Example 1 (http://exper.3drecursions.com/vlam/vlam_example.mov)
The basic animated Vlam example.
Vlam Example 2 (http://exper.3drecursions.com/vlam/vlam_example_2.mov)
This one use Dissolve, Blur, Glow and expecially Trails filters.
Vlam Example 3 (http://exper.3drecursions.com/vlam/vlam_example_3.mov)
This is a simple multi-layer Vlam usage. It mimics the example n.2 but uses two Vlam instances (layers) to add an extra underlying effect on the overall animation.
Vlam Example 4 (http://exper.3drecursions.com/vlam/vlam_example_4.mov)
This one mimics the Example n.3 but has different Vlam associated filters disposition: the two filters sequences are now duplicated to both Vlam layers and then a Glow one close the processing; a Dissolve is used to fade in and out as always.
Vlam Example 5 (http://exper.3drecursions.com/vlam/vlam_example_5.mov)
This one mimics the Example n.3 but everything is pushed into a Drip filter.

Yeah, I looked at a couple of the flows, but I didn't see any sort of preview for what was going on. I guess I should have been more specific.
Is there a way to get it to work so you can see what the heck is going on?
:)

:)You can click on the small "left-cricle" of every DF's objects and you can see the preview of the selected object (and the connected ones) on left or right views: you can have a certain flow's part on left and another on right views!
Click on the last filter's circle (or the Saver one) to preview the complete Flow.
Vlam FXs are animated using Splines: just switch to the Splines view and you'll see all the curves that determinate the specific flow's FX.
Hoping it helps! ;)

Looks great.
It occured to me that besides the obviousy flashy "energy tendril" results, that system could really well be used - with proper use of mattes, colors and filters - to create some pretty good looking smoke and pyro effects.
For instance, I attached a test picture of a fiery bird I whipped up in a few minutes. Of course, it needs a lot more work like traditional stock/particle fire effects, a more substantial body (maybe comp in a CGI or a live bird) etc. to be usable. But the I think you get the gist of it.

A new simple example Vlam Example 6 (http://exper.3drecursions.com/vlam/vlam_example_6.mov) and the DigitalFusion/DFX+ Flow (http://3drecursions.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=812#812). ;)

Any chance to have a Fusion compatible release?!?There's no problem using it with Fusion as far as I know.
It should work on both Fusion and DFX+.
The app is not supported anymore, but the source-code is available.
Freak!!

Obviously it will no longer work in Digital Fusion or DFX+ version 5.0 or above.
As the plugin architecture is now different.

Ok; good to know. I'm still using the version 4.
Maybe someone could download the source code (vlam v1.03c (http://www.komkomdoorn.com/files/vlam_v1_03_source.zip)) and port it to version 5.
