View Full Version : Merging a character screws it up!

Hi guys. I have made very desperate attempts to merge a nicely skinned character in a scene with another character. But the moment the merge is complete, the merged character is screwed like hell. I'll post a screenshot of that thing here:

PLease help me guys. I did a search on this one in our fourms and found a few threads, but they are useless because no outcome has been observed in the replies.

I will be very grateful to all who help. :)

is hard to tell by just that image.

but maybe is something with their rigs. have you renamed each and every object and bone to specific names in each file before merging?

use the rename tool inside the "tool" menu. you can just add prefixes to each of them, like "joe - " and "bob - ". remember to unhide everything also.

A hack we used to do was just group everything related to the character, biped, footsteps and all, and then merge it into your scene. Worked for us.

it could be a lot of things. Are the units different in the scene you are merging into? Like metric in one scene and standard in the other? Have you tried this sequence:
1.save the skin ( or physique) parameters
2.remove the skin modifier
3. merge
4. reapplying the skin modifier and then load the saved skin parameters

are the bones tweaked out or just the skin? Are you using physique or the skin modifier? Are there other modifiers in your stack?

Thank you, Gentlemen, for responding. Hmm..

1] Both the bipeds have different names, because I did so from the motion panel of each biped, before merging.
2] Since I use biped, I have used physique.
3] When I merge the "grouped character" into the scene, it converts all the objects, including the bones, into editable meshes, and every single modifier is lost, including mesh smooth.
4] The merged objects converge at a single point.

Gabriel, I tried that procedure, but the biped is both scaled down and seperated from the main body. The physique data imports without any flaw, but still some vertices remain out of range. And the body mesh screws up so badly that I can't even know where to place the biped.

Here's the character I am trying to merge:

I wonder why the character with all the objects linked to the bones won't get merged. I also tried exporting and importing *.3DS file and the *.chr file, but in vain.

Select everything related to your character, then character > Create Character , then character > Save character. Now open your other scene and character > insert character.
Hope this works.

PS : You can use Skin with Biped without any problem. It's fully supported.

if groutcho idea does not work, try breaking everything down and merging in parts, so you can try to find what is messing everything up, if itīs the meshes, physique, biped, etc.

btw, why is the biped seperated from the body? it doesnīt need to.

Yeaaa! Thank you guys for all the help! I finally figured it out and pin-pointed the units setup as the main problem, as Gabriel has guessed it!

I also tried:
1.save the skin ( or physique) parameters
2.remove the skin modifier
3. merge
4. reapplying the skin modifier and then load the saved skin parameters

as pointed out by Gabriel and it works too. However, the Group hack does not work.

And the biped was not seperated from the body, it was in the body itelf, but all the bones were aligned at the same point in the world UCS! But all is well now, and I give all the credits to you my good friends! My regards and well wishes are with you!
