View Full Version : Very Newbie Help: Maya Help
Random_Andy 06-21-2005, 09:51 AM Hi,
I am learning how to use Maya (6.0), i have been at it for about a week.
Everyone has to start somewhere. I can model simple objects.
I need help. I want to learn how to model a good realistic head or a car, which is the best to use, Polygons,NURBS, or Sub-d's ???? i am looking for good quality image at the end of it.
Could anyone help me make a head or a car model?

Andy, if you are not in a rush to learn everything at once... then maybe you should try a little bit of everything. See what you like the best.
I personally would start out with polygon modeling. There are ALOT of tuts on it. I learned to model with Nurbs first, and I wish I had learned Poly first. No particular reason though... just personal preference. You may end up absolutely LOVING Nurbs.
Check them all out, and see which one you like best. Thats the best advice I can give.

Nurbs are unbeatable for industrial/machine made objects e.g cars, chairs, tools, equipment etc as it is easy to get nice, flowing curves for the objects. But bear in mind that nurbs do take a fair bit of research and practice to get the hang of.
As a newbie, I would suggest you start with polygons, especially for modelling a face, as a nurbs face requires attaching/stiching, reversing surface direction, achieving tangency between patches and battling with a 5 star junction on the head...fiddly problems even for more experienced users.
Once you have modelled you polygon head, you could then try converting to a Sub-D surface and see how it goes.
All three modelling methods definately have their uses.
Good luck, Maya is a fantastic program.

Hey man. I would probably try learning all the poly tools at first. NURBS can be a bit cumbersome and with a solid understanding of Polys, Sub-D's aren't as intimidating. check out some of the tutorials listed here. they should point you in the right direction.
