Good idea, I was thinking liquids (nice and broad and pretty hard as well), but why not both?

Hah...! :D

I think glass/castics would be a good challenge. Only thing is, would we follow the same rules and the fabric challenge (mesh cannot be altered). If so, what mesh would be most appropriate for glass/castics. Or would the scene file include multiple ojbects...say a wine glass with liquid, a tumbler with liquid and ice cubes, etc.

metals (not the shiny ones, but steel & iron etc ...)

I'd like to suggest a liquids challenge;
I've been trying to create a photo-realistic Pint of Lager for ages.

I've a few attempts but would love to see what you guys do as well.

lighting a simple scene would be good as well.

How about something slimy and gross? A sort of tribute to all those zombie flicks of late with all the gooey bits hanging from their faces? http://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/grin.gif

This is hard to decide...
The C4D Material systems is like an unexplored universe...

The following challenges could be interesting (from my point of view:

- Stone / Marble / Concrete
- Glass / Fluids
- Skin / Hair
- SFX (like electrical stuff, sparks etc.)
- Metalls / Chrome / Brushed
- Natuals like Trees / Bark / Leafs....

Stone / Marble / Concrete is my favorite - I think...

how about a fury challenge? Like a teddy bear for instance. I made one, but ended up just making him look like a plush toy. you can go check out my gallery at deviantart if you want. And i think alot of people could be having trouble with setting up hair in shave, so it would be educational.

Sorry if this is slightly muddled, I am very tired :P just saw the thread and decided to sugest my own idea.

Like I'm thinking of like short hamster like fur or soemthing.

How about having a set scene and then test how everyone adds different lighting and renders the final image out.
If it is materials based, then aged metals would be good, with rust, flaking paint, etc.

Something which I think is very interesting is simulations. How about doing a Dynamics Challenge. Or Thinking Particles, Cloth Sim,...
I'd really like to see this. Additionally I think maybe something else than materials would be good for the second challenge. You can have materials again in the 3rd :)

agree everyone should use same objects..not mods..and only standard shaders.

Sushi FOO head to head...

Grass would be great!!!

Creating grass etc. means use of plugs (in most cases).
I havent heard a thing about dynamics in last months. How about creating some mechanics with help from dynamics and other modules? Or particles, in which Cinema can be very proud of?

Or.. A Rube Goldberg Xpresso driven attachment driven by a single gear. That way they can be chained in all kinds of orders to make machines regardless of who wins the coffee mug. Some mechanical modeling as well as a bit of xpresso would drive the challenge.

It seems like the fabric challenge was so great because it was very tightly focused, not open to interpretation like something thematic (Interior or exterior scenes). It was great to see everyone digging deeper and deeper into what could be done with existing tools.

Whether it's grass or human skin, metal or porcelein doesn't matter to me as the results will be a great education for everyone and widen our librarys of useful techniques and materials.

I'd like to see a challenge in metallic (car) paint and tire rubber :).

I know there are a number of topics on metallic paint but I have yet to see convincing results imo.
