View Full Version : Normal maps vs bump maps

the difference is that a Bump map is only a black and white depth map image ware as a Normal Map has colors to Display bothe Depth and Angles of a Normal,
So if you were to move around a model with a Bump Map you would see no difference in how it looks ware as if you did the same with a normal map it would apear as if sertain areas got darker or lighter depending on the angle you were at. So it looks more like there is actual geometry there when there isn't.
Normal Maps also makes lighting look more realistic on a low poly model as well as textures.
For an example go to the game art section and look at the thread called (Hunter) wich was started by me.
I also sugest reading the post set by the admenistrators there which is called Normal Maping. it is at the top of the first page.
