I have to make some planets for a real-time application and I need to be able to view the planets from any angle. My problem is that ordinary sphere mapping doesn't do the job properly, getting those hideous artifacts at the poles. I know of techniques where you can use multipass rendering, multiple UV channels and multiple textures to eliminate seams, but I'd really like to do it in one pass and using one texture.
Does anyone have any ideas?
