View Full Version : Examples of pencil sketches using Painter
kilpatrick 06-20-2005, 06:50 AM I need some convincing on how good Painter is in creating pencil sketches. Care to give me some fine examples of (uncoloured) pencil sketches using Painter?

Do you not have Painter? If you do why not just open it up and try for yourself? I've seen plenty of nice sketches people did straight in Painter to do there final illustrations/paintings. I don't think I'll ever get to the point where I use the computer to do the pencil sketches...theres just something nice about a good ole piece of paper and a real pencil for sketching. :)

I would recommend you download my cutom pencil brush. It is far better than the one that came with Painter. It actually behaves and looks like a real pencil. Just get it from the "goodies" section of my website. I sketch with it all the time, and if I didn't tell you, you would think they are real pencil sketches, not digital ones.

Actually, I've found that the Flattened pencil in Painter recreates real pencil line excellently. Make sure to pick a light gray color and set your brush tracking the way you like it. I use this all the time for sketching and it looks just like real pencil lines.

I've been using "dirty marker" to do all my sketch work in Painter. I love how it reminds me of Verithin brand wax based color pencils I use to use. Here's a quick sub 30 minute work I just did. Really loose, but you get the poiint.

Umm... here's another loosh(ish) design sketch I did a while back with dirty marker.

Not "fine examples" ;) but here's a couple experiments using IX's pencils.

I agree 100%! I tried them out and that is now all I use when it comes to digital sketching, at least. The ink pen in Photoshop is okay, but I am biased now on those brushes you made! Even touched up some sketches I did on paper a while back.
90% of the attached file was using Corel and Rob's brushes, and the rest was an airbrush. (mostly the wings)

To prove you don't necessarily have to reach for a brush called "pencil" to get a pencil look/feel, here's some thumbnails I did with the Watercolour and Round Camelhair brushes.
