Poor little blue bird, why why why

Hey Olijosman, I am a big fan of your work, but I was reluctant here to comment, but now am not.

The hunter looks great, the rifle, the fierce eyes, the wickedness of the pause, the fabulous coat, the hat , and poor little bird are all masterful. But, I had a problem with the glowing light coming from the depth of the forest. It is a little confusing to me as to where it leads and how it fits, may be over brightened, I don't know, you are the master, but just as an observer, I felt that.

By the way, your paintings histograms are awesome

+Ashakarc - thank you very much for your commentary, but..damn, I don't understand it very well...my English is really basic, like from "sesame street" :argh:

My English is not perfect either, it is my second language, so I may have mispelled what I meant. Let me try again:
The relation between the figure and the background is a bit competing against each other. The eyes are very focal in the painting and shifting the balance of the composition to the upper right, which is great. The bright light at the end of the forest trail is another attracting point that has; at least to my eyes; an equivalent energy. That relationship is what I meant. I am not saying it's right or wrong, it's just how I see it.

Don't worry about it, I am just an observer, but I have high esteem to your work

olijosman
06-21-2005, 07:45 AM
Ok, Ashakarc, I understand it now :) and thanks, it is a very good observation. Right, mainly it has 2 attention points : the face of the happiness hunter and the light of the forest end ,where the blue birds escape.it's like an invitation to follow him in his mortal footpath...:)

CoreyArtE- Hey Olijosman, normaly you make a concept sketch before you make your finish render. Can you by chance , show us your concept sketch for this piece?

Corey, not necessarily I make the same process in each image. In this occasion I only made a rough basic sketch before beginning the final image.

Olijosman, its awesome picture (as always by the way:D ) I love the colors and brush work is really top notch!! When comes to painting, how its possible that you use Photoshop but not Corel Painter? Photoshop is great app but what I really miss is some kind of smeary brush loaded with paint! Do you manage your color blending just by Smudge brush? Or do you have another "trick" for it? I have seen your great tutorial on your site, but for me its a bit limited in terms of spontaneous painting (make brush strokes then go over it with smudge instead of rapid painting by colors with realtime blending).

Thanks in advance!

Libor

P.S. I´m just curious I´m not saying its not a good way of working...

olijosman
06-22-2005, 01:50 PM
Libor-how its possible that you use Photoshop but not Corel Painter?
Well, I know and I have used Painter, but I prefer photoshop.I work fast with this program.
+About the tutorial, that is only one specific forms to make a painting effect .I use other kinds of paint and mix(blend) colors, of course.:arteest:
Anyway, the program is a tool, the important thing is not feel limitation in your work.

P.S. I´m just curious I´m not saying its not a good way of working...

Of course Libor, it is a good way for me :)

CoreyArtE
06-22-2005, 05:22 PM
I dont mean to keep bothering you with all these questions, but this one thing keeps bothering me. In photoshop there is an option to turn your brushes to "wet edges". Do you ever use that , maybe just for the sketching process or anything?

olijosman
06-22-2005, 07:55 PM
Hi again Corey:)
about that option,"wet edges" I do not use much, maybe in some occasion, when I do color sketched :

06-22-2005, 10:51 PM
Yeah, hi its me again lol. I must be annoying. Well I started trying to learn how to paint trees like you did, but i'm having trouble. I keep getting really fuzzy looking results. I used the same type of brush u did, but I cant seem to get the same natural look of realife leaves. Perhaps you could give me some tips?http://coreyloving.com/TEMPSTuff/Trees1fuzzy.jpg

olijosman
06-23-2005, 10:30 AM
Well...I did not say that it would be easy, of course :) That is a way to make a good base, you must paint and give the form with other brushes.
Looks good indeed.you must play with the colors and the form, You know... Painting and photo are different things.
By the way...this looks like a tutorial thread :D :)

Hi Jose!

I have no idea why this image did not hit the first page!
Awesome work (as always) and congratulations on the Exposé award, too.:applause:

Do you use any visual reference for the clothes materials?
The leather on his coat is impressive, and in many of your works the clothes are so well represented that you can almost feel their texture.

olijosman
06-25-2005, 08:16 PM
Hi Zeoyn, and thanks
hehehe..what I can say?I would like to see it in front page too :p
anyway 5 reply pages it is great for me...really thanks to all

+Right, the clothes, I looked for documentation about the "seam models" (sorry, I do not know the english word ) of this kind of clothes. You can see the seams of the back, very typical of those old dress coats.

Very nice painting! The background is pretty incredible. And I like the colors.

A few things about the guy bother me though. For some reason the head doesn't seem to be attached to the body, it looks like the head is just placed behind the face covering rather than the cloth being formed around the structure of the face. I would try moving the head and face covering, but not the cloth behind his head up and a little to the right.

Also a few things about the musket, you should put a flint in the hammer so you know he's been using the gun. Also the musket seams a bit small for him, If you look at the length of his arm, I can't see him holding it up to his shoulder to fire, the butt is far too short. The way he is holding it is a bit unnatural if you have ever held a musket. I don't have one with my right now to check it out but I would think holding it forward a little bit would keep it weighted a little better so it isn't so hard to hold it at that much of an angle.

The cocked hat is shaped a little wierd as well but those things are hard to get right without exact reference.
Also for realism and authenicity sake it might be cool to add a hunting pouch and powder horn, since he is left handed it would be on his left side, some of those powder horns are pretty cool looking and the white horn could add a spot of light in the dark corner.

I don't expect you to make all these changes now that it's done but I thought I'd point them just in case. To make a great painting even better.

Congrats!

Djampa- Thanks, nowadays I'm working in a making of.

Aedilhum-
about the head, sorry I see it in a correct position, attached with the body.
Also the musket seams a bit small for him, If you look at the length of his arm, I can't see him holding it up to his shoulder to fire, the butt is far too short
The butt is short and the weapon is very long. It is an old French gun.It does not seem heavy.About The way he is holding the weapon, you are seeing a scene in the time, this does not mean that hi takes the weapon of that way all the time and it does not mean that he is left-handed too :) Hi has been stopped to watch you.
About the shapes of the hat, I have seen documentation of this kind of hats (and clothes, the typical clothes of French Highwayman ) but I made my own design.
About details like the powder I must say that he is not an authentic "real" hunter... it is an allegory , anyway he has great pockets :D

I don't mean to nitpick with my comments, I just am quite familiar with this topic and thought I'd point out my thoughts. I understand that it isn't supposed to be a snapshot of a character from history but I still think that the little details help you in identifying with it. I'm not trying to put down your piece (I mean it's a great piece!) I'm just trying to point out some thing you might not have realized from your research.

About The way he is holding the weapon, you are seeing a scene in the time, this does not mean that hi takes the weapon of that way all the time and it does not mean that he is left-handed too :) Hi has been stopped to watch you.
-I say he is left handed not only because he is holding the musket in his left hand but because the lock is on the opposite side of a right handed gun. (also, stick that flint in there)

The butt is short and the weapon is very long. It is an old French gun.It does not seem heavy.
-I think that is what throws it off a little for me, for the length of the barrel, I would think it would be resting in the dirt the way he is holding it. Well I'm not going to argue with you about the size of the gun, it still seems short to me but that's your choice and I don't think 9 out of 10 people would give it a second thought.

Anyway...again, great piece.

oh my gosh!! I'm blown away by this work. The lighting is great and the foliage is awesome. Textures like the many others who commented is great! By the way, did u throw in texture to create some grainy effect for the picture? I see u have that in other works too. Just wondering how's it's done. Tried doing in the past but failed.
I really thought the foliages came from some real pictures. May I know what size are you working on for this piece?
I'm glad I viewed this thread, learnt a lot from you. Hope to see more stuff in future.

Awesome work

olijosman
07-06-2005, 09:53 PM
Thanks again :)

Shuwan, this it is a small tutorial about the grain in my paintings:
-1 You make a layer with the gray color RGB 128
-2 Add noise ( 400%)
-3 Brush strokes filter (apply 3 strokes filter spatter)
-4 Blur filter
-5 turn the layer in overlay layer. Opacity 3, 4%... or more :)
http://www.nibbledpencil.com/imagenes_med/NOISE.jpg
You can see the original size of the painting, in my Web, or in the first page in the hi resolution link. ;)

Hey jose I've always had a hard time geting really clean looking lines in photoshop with just my wacom alone. I was wondering, what settings do you use when you make your line art before a painting. Do you normally use black, dark browns, or some other color for your line art aswell?

olijosman
07-11-2005, 10:09 AM
Hi Corey.
About the line work :
First- I make a rough drawing or sketch
Second- I create a layer filled with white paint , and we give a little transparency (opacity)
Third- we created another layer and we make the drawing with "beauty line".I use the brush size by pressure deactivating the opacity brush by pressure.
:) (and a trick) for these line works I put a satin paper on the tablet.the pencil slips in a different way...more interesting for this kind of drawing
-About the color, I work with black and white.in the final step I add a color balance layer to give it a color tone

Remarkable! what more can i say! I would love to buy a cd tutorial from you. Jose i honestly think you are the best cg artist in the world. I have yet to find anyone who impresses me as much. Currently I am a student in college at the art institute trying to learn from the master painters. I am currently studying William Bouguereau, he's my favorite. But i'm having trouble figuring out their painting method. I saw some stuff online saying they make a color layer over their line work that they call the dead layer, and work from dark to light. Do you also work from dark too light? I hate to keep bothering you so much, but i desperately want to improve my skills. Jose your the man!

Well, thanks again Corey:) nonproblem.About cd tutorial and this kind of stuff, you know, my Web site is a personal web, I do not have a business and the few tutorials are free, of course :p

William Bouguereau!!? Hahahha...great..he is one of my favorites too :)
"mountain of things" has influence of this painter.Funny, my method is in the other way.I paint a general base with the intermediate tones(all the drawing).
it is a good way to see all the scene. The following step: I add the main shades zones.Anyway in the "makin of" you will see this better. :) ( I am making the translation):argh:

Te quedó muy bien el majo. ¿Te basaste en algún personaje de película?, es que me recuerda a la portada de un dvd. Creo que se llamaba Romasanta o algo así.
En fin el contraste que le diste al cuadro le da una gran profundidad, lo mismo que sucede con la precisión del detalle del personaje y el difuminado del fondo. ¿Empleaste fotocomposición o tú lo pintaste todo?. De cualquiera de las dos formas el resultado final es buenísimo. ¡Olé!

Thanks Esternocleidomastoideo and Armocelu, but you must make your questions in English... it is not my native language too, but it is the forum common language

I have seen also the movie of "Le pacte des loups", and yes, your character remind me that too, especially at the begining of the film where the main characters are whit the face covered as in your image.

Hi Olijosman, it's me the annoying guy again :] I want to ask you couple of questions about your work.

As I look at your work, there is always a concept and some hidden meaning crafted with great brush strokes. My question is: How do you approach the painting? Do you prepare or pre-visualize the concept before starting the first lines, or things just happen on the fly? As most topics you have shown here, they have subjects, clear ones. What prompt you to do them, as they don't seem to be a personal reflection of a kind? In other words, do you follow certain agenda or purpose, or it is part of a story telling?

My interest in finding answers to these questions will help me alot in understanding "the act of making" with regard to this form of work.

Much appreciated in advance :)

olijosman
07-13-2005, 08:43 PM
Hey...these questions are not annoying for me:)
Whou..hehehe I need a dictionary! I have understood everything...I think :)

Well, the root of all the process is an idea. This does not mean a scene idea with elements etc (girl killing dragoon in flowers field ). Is simply an idea,a word or a phrase,a concept...that is the root to develop an idea expressed with artistic language (the painting, in this case)

Happiness (or lack of happiness) was the seed for this work .In the process to develop the seed I have read and investigated ( I like to learn things when I make a painting) Then it is when I define what I want to express and the way to do it.
+ Example of developed idea:

http://www.nibbledpencil.com/imagenes_gra/MOUNTAIN%20SKETCH3.jpg

This it is a sketch of an idea "Mountain of things" .it speaks of all the material things that we hoarded in our life...with the funny idea that will always accompany to us.But the lady of belladona crown, remembers to us that we are wrong ,with a kiss.:)
Our obsession to hoard things is what I want to express in the painting .
Thanks for your interest, Ashakarc (unfortunately I write in English very badly...)

ashakarc
07-13-2005, 10:08 PM
Oh, thanks for the answers. So, it seems that it is story telling that starts with an idea, and you build it up as you go. What I really like about your approach is that you try to convey a message, of human and societal values. Mainly, because your characters are not build out of vacuum, they are a product of the whole subject. I tell you, this is very very rare in this forum, some have really good skills in painting and rendering, but the subject is pure eye candy. Your work, is on the contrary, full of symbols, gestures, and meaning and most importantly dynamic.

btw, I still think "Identity Rape" is the best work ever posted on CGTalk, worthy to be in a museum
The thing about this quality of art work, is that, it demands from the artist to be a good reader as well as a good painter. Reader, in the sense of culture, society and history, and human behaviour. This way, the artist is able to load up the work and let the audience have the fun of reading the meaning behind. I typically enjoy this type of work, in fact it is the only type of realism that I would enjoy. Keep up the good work, and looking forward to see more.

Yes! Happiness is a blue bird, which can be shot at any time the hunters like.

The yellow fall forest, the masked man and the gun are all the hunters in our life.

We should always keep Happiness a treasue.

Is that what you want to tell us, I guess?

Hi again Ashakarc, your words mean much for me

What I really like about your approach is that you try to convey a message, of human and societal values. Mainly, because your characters are not build out of vacuum, they are a product of the whole subject.

Right, I don't want to use my time in "only" good technique work.
I try to show a history,a sensation or a reflection about something. In order to do this it is necessary to extend knowledge and grow in culture,I think

I try to make a balance between technique and content but I do not know if this is pompous or pretentious. It is an internal conflict..because I love eye candy works too.
This it is a left painting :
http://www.nibbledpencil.com/imagenes_gra/STB3.jpg

I use the realism to attract the common public ( realism is something popular) The funny thing is you can only see a guy with rifle , or try to understand all the elements (including the title ..the best clue)
Thanks again for your commentaries:) and right, I am happy with the "Identity Rape" result

Thanks Hui Tian

+generaly how long does it take u to make those concept sketches? hmmm... few hours
+How long does it take to make your line art from sketch to finish? I really do not know but that is the most important part...it makes fail or work the final painting.
+I've been trying your method and keep geting frustrated with the results
Really?? you don't draw sketches and different designs before a painting? You do not draw the scene or the characters before painting? The method is simple, Corey...the difficulty is in the image complexity.

Your work is stunning and you are an excellent draftsman. I've read the entire post and I haven't seen, or may have missed, questions adressing the reference you used for your piece.

Ok Jose, here's a new question for you. ( I think) You get such rich colors in your work. Do you use the eye dropper tool at all to help aid your colors from reference pictures.

Another question. In the color tab where you select your colors, do have yours set on HSB. Do you ONLY use the color tab to choose your colors, and do you leave the little color gradation at the bottom of the menu on RGB? I personaly set mine to "Current Color." In other words, how do you go about using the color tab . I find it small and and alittle bit harder to use than the color picker window built inside photoshop.

Thanks for all your support Jose. If you can please be as thorough as possible. I am eager to learn.

Hi Corey
Remember, I have serious difficulties to understand complex phrases in English and much more to write correctly.
-You ask to me if I lame the color from photos?¿? no of course, and I don't like to use realistic colors in my paintings.

-About HSB sliders ( CMYK SPECTRUM) , sorry but I don't see where is the difficulty in using it.

-Anyway you can do a small color palete with main color spots .when you are painting you mix the colors (because you have opacity by pressure) and you can use quickly the dropper to take the resulting tones of the mixture.

-About HSB sliders ( CMYK SPECTRUM) , sorry but I don't see where is the difficulty in using it.

Ok sorry about that. I guess i phrased it wronge. I know you dont steal colors from photoes, I was wondering if you use them to study from in a sense, not use them directly. My apologies friend.

For the HSB slider, what I ment was, what was your method for using it, not if it is difficulat to use period. For example, do you go down to your color CYMK Spectrum and select color, or even do you use your keyboard to type in values for the HSB slider, instead of moving the slider with the mouse. You know, just the little things. I know they do not seem like much to you, but for me it can be a real pain.

Sorry to bother you...I can tell that I'm stressing you. My apologies again.

No problem Corey...misinterpreted words:) I would like to be more explicit with the language, sorry.
-Absolutely, I observe the reality and documentation in my realistic works,I always say this.Your own hands or face can be a good reference when you have doubts.
-About HSB slider... words are hard for my, :p I will prepare a small tutorial in images, but give me a little bit of time, I'm really really busy :)
Best

-By the way...I always do the color selections with the pencil tablet, I never use the mouse.

Hmm I see. Thanks alot jose. Hey , but just tell me, why do you put your color spectrum at the bottom of the color menu on CYMK Spectrum?

Ok, I understand it :D you ask me why I don't use the RGB spectrum, for example? Well, you can see in the explanation, I don't use that bar. But you know, that is only my way of work, not necessarily good for other people

Ok, I got it, thanks again for your time and patience. I will continue to pratice your method for awhile until I feel comfortable enough to branch off onto my own. That way I can learn more.

What a great tutorial. I just wanted to comment on the clarity of each piece of information. Wherre there is a lack of explanation with words, the pictures fill right in. It's a great way to start my morning learning!! Thank you so much.
