View Full Version : issues with videocard, i think... (i'm seeing purple bars on screen)
hopper2k 06-18-2005, 10:26 PM well, this just started last nite, as I recently got the PC game Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault. I was in the 4th level or so, and then the graphics just turned purple and choppy and gross. Then it crashed on me. So I started the game again, and the same thing happened, purple graphics. I restarted my computer, and same thing. i've also noticed I see slight purple colored bars up and down and all across on my monitor. i put in a DVD and the picture on that is screwed up alot, so i just think it has to be the videocard.
i have an ATI radeon 9700 pro 128 mb, had it for about 2 years and have never had a problem. my processor is a P4 2.56 ghz, and i'm running my comp. on 1 gb of RAM. i've never had any type of graphical issues before, up until this game. i've never had a problem with PC games on my computer up until now. hell, i was running Half Life 2 a few months back with no problems at all, and that was a beauty. I'm updating my driver for my video card right now to see if that will fix the problem. Argh, this sucks and is really annoying, because my 3D software I work in, Maya, I see those slight purple bars in the work area too.
anyone have a similar problem before, any suggestions? HELP! thanks in advance.

Sounds like borked Video RAM, from what I've heard about it. Try swapping it out with another video card (if you have one) and see if you can reproduce the error.
I had a similar problem.. For me the bars were yellow, but in the end it turned out to be the hard drive oddly enough :)
If you have the ability, try a different video card. If that doesnt do it, then you probably are in luck and wont have to replace the card. Also, it is a possibility that the PSU is going bad, though I'm not too sure it will have this effect, it could :)

unfortunately, i don't have another video card lying around to test and see if that is the problem. other things i've noticed, i can't play any type of video in full screen mode, and the exact way DVDs are looking scratchy and fuzzy on my computer remind me exactly of all those green flashing numbers in The Matrix movies, if you can imaging seeing that over a video image. even a current test with the ATI Catalyst Center to test the 3D graphics (with the car driving on the road) looks choppy and messed up, just like my MoH game did.
the card itself might have gone out due to over heating, since i've had my computer tower in a cramped space and don't have any fans blowing on it. but the card itself along with my computer is 2 years old (i'm not sure what the life expectancy of a video card is), so perhaps it is time to get a new one, as much as i don't want to, but i have no choice. i looked at the card itself and it looked fine, a bit of dust on it, but i recently dusted the inside of my tower but perhaps it wasn't enough and maybe the dust itself played a factor.
well, everything still looks jacked and purple bars are all around, and i've done pretty much everything else i can think of to solve the problem. i've even updated every single type of driver i could think of.
dang it!

It definitly sounds like something is dying, but it could be that the video card is overheating. Is the fan on the card spinning? Worth checking, but it sounds like a more serious problem.
Well its fairly easy to test an over heating problem. Get a big box fan and blow it right into the case, if things get better perhaps something is over heating. It's really too bad you cant try another video card to make absolutly sure. Can you borrow a friend's or something?

ok, it took awhile, but i was finally able to check some stuff out.
Rabid pitbull - yep, the fan on the card is still spinning.
lots - i have a big fan now blowing on the back of it but to no avail. and TODAY i was finally able to get a friend's old ATI card to test it out, and yep, that worked out, no more purpleness. but at least we've pinpointed the problem but i still have to shell out some dough for a new card.
i was considering an ATI 9800 pro 256 mb but I know some people who have had problems with 9800 and Maya. so far i had no problems with my ATI 9700 pro 128 mb and Maya, but now i'm concerned for my next purchase. so now i'm looking into nVidia's quadro FX line, either a 500, 540, and i've seen some for right around or a little over $200 which would be great for me. and i believe the 540 i was looking at had a lifetime warranty, which would be schweeet.
I would get a Geforce.
You weren't using a Pro level card before, so why get one now? A geforce in that price range will bring more raw power to the table than the lowest end quadros. The only problem is driver optimizations for Maya are lacking on Gamer cards.
