If you search for this, you'll find quite a few threads that discuss the very same thing, and ultimatly, the answer is, it's a personal preference what size tablet you buy - most people choose from the 6x8 and the 9x12 though.

If you use a lot of shorter strokes, the smaller tablet will probbely suit you better, and vice versa, if you've got a sweeping style, the larger tablet may be your choice.

You should also consider desk space - You can't squeeze it in next tot he monitor - you can get interferance, so thats something else you can consider. If you havn't used one before, you will notice that drawing with the tablet is different to paper, but it's something that takes a short amount of time to get used to :)

Your best option is to find somewhere where you can try both before you purchase - or better yet, you may know someone who has one, and you can have a trial run on it for an hour, and then see if you find it too small/large. Bear in mind transition issues while trial running, tablets are great!
