I was there in 1997. You've chosen one of the wonders of the world and one of the toughest modeling jobs you could ask for. The thing about that particular temple is that it has a 'living skin.' The entire outside facade is alive with the story of Khmer battles versus the Cham, the Thai, the Chinese, etc. There are also tens of thousands of bas-reief 'Apsaras' (dancing figures) on the walls. So my point is, along with the decayed granite and overgrown spong trees, there's a reason few people have modeled it! And certainly never up close.

I'm not sure if you're going to include it, but as you probably know there's a long, unkempt lake overgrown with lillies crossed by a crumbling causeway. The lake makes it much more interesting at dusk when the hawkers and ad hoc tour guides pack up.

One of the photo tricks at Angkor is to include a wandering monk in the shot somewhere. Their orange robes stand out amazingly against the stone. Many people have probably seen the National Geographic photo that became famous for that detail. Just a thought for a Pupi / Piles-style killer detail.

Also some of the temples in those photos in your link are other temples. One is the temple known as the Bayon and most of the others are Ta Promh, the overgrown temple.

The Bayon features the face of the god Angka, very easy to recognize. Angka was endowed with the power to see all things and all times; thus he's depicted in that freaky manner of looking in every direction over the gates, porticos, archways and such. The pineapple was the symbol of Angka because it seems to have eyes that look every direction.

Later of course the Khmer Rouge appropriated Angka as a way to lend nationalistic legitimacy to their regime, and in fact Pol Pot, whose actual name wasn't known by the people, encouraged being seen as the manifestation of Angka. This included Angka's 'all seeing' characteristic as justification for the KR's sadistic internal security apparatus, in which children denounced parents and spies were hidden beneath beds to overhear married couples' conversations...

Excellent. I love Angkor.
Are you planning to do Banteay Srei also?

That's fantastic work mate. The texturing really makes the model look ancient. Kind of as if it has seen a few wars... Just like Govinda was saying. I feel inpired!

The upper portions are close to photographic with nice detail. This is great stuff!

Is there really an opening like that one on the bottom right beneath the righward-facing upper-floor façade? I think only the corner vertices are walk-through.
