View Full Version : Applying "how to draw" lessons from books in Painter
kilpatrick 06-17-2005, 10:46 AM Well, I've bought lots of how-to-draw art books during these past few years, and now that I have the Painter *echo, echo, echo* I'm wondering if those lessons from the books can be applied to using the software. Is this possible? Can I practice lessons such as gesture drawing, figures in cylinders, action lines, contour drawing and so forty on my Painter?

well, give it a try
you can always post your results on forums and get advice from helpful forum visitors.
but it depends too
drawing on a computer is VERY different from drawing with pencil on paper. One you can draw on the computer doesn't mean you will be able to do so on paper. Both media have much different feel and sense to them.

Hi,
Sure you can! It'll be a lot easier if you have a Wacom tablet, though, and if you're new to a Wacom tablet, plan on spending a little time to get used to it.
A lot of Painter artists prefer to do their drawings and sometimes their inkings using traditional pencil, pen, paper, and scan them into Painter to do their coloring/painting.
If you do scan your drawing/inking, open it in Painter, use Select > All, then click inside the selection to lift it to a Layer. Change the Layer's Composite Method to Gel or Multiply to make the white background transparent. Then create new Layers and drag them down the Layers palette list below the linework/ink Layer to do your coloring/painting.
Have fun!
