Thanks for the heads up. I might be able to pounce on this deal. I really appreciate the fact that Lightwave and Modo both come as dual platform discs.

I run my license on my Mac Laptop, and our large P4 system. I've also had it going on a dual 64bit machine too.

I saw this last night, very tempting. I think it's time to add a new tool...
Let's now see how Silo will respond ! Price wars !
I'm still learning Lightwave Modeler. What's wrong with Lightwave 8.3 for modeling?
I also see people jumping on the Silo 1.4 banwagon as well.....is Lightwave's modeler that lacking?

Silo has a tool for surfacing called the topology brush. Similar tools cost thousands of dollars, Silo is $100. Even if you just buy Silo for the topology it's well worth it.
Yes Silo is very cheap compared to other products, maybe Modo has to come down more in price then? What else is Silo better at?

Holy Moley...that is just insane. What a great introductory price to get in on...I can't wait to see their Rendering tech @ Siggraph....man....
How about if you have a educational license?? Does the offer includes that aswell, or do you have to have a commercial license?

Bad thing about MODO's educational license IS good for one year ! I would jump on it without hesitation using the educational route BUT worthless after a year. Yet, I've bought numerous softwares with NO time limits and upgradeable. I hope MODO re-consisders this point !
My .02 cents.

I think he meant he had a LW education licence and want to know if that qualifies for the Modo grab.....
....*Well LW ED does have a serial number, but I think you can email Lux and see what they have to say

I would contact Modo people and ask them. I took advantage of Newteks crossgrade special with student license of Maya so you never know.
I got it :bounce: with the LW special VERY COOL :buttrock:
feels like LW version 12 modeler I'm a XSI users as well
and It got LW K,I,S,S With All the XSI Features, really a joy to uses

Now I understand your point from an educational perspective. I did have a one time the educational LW version and went commercial. I meant it from this point of view. However, I am able to buy educational products but MODO's approach is that the license is only good for one year. If I understand this correctly, the software goes belly up after time.

So Dan if your using Modo now and they produce a rendering technology to go with it, does that mean a book will be in the works soon...from you?
Contacted LUX right away, but haven't had anything back yet.

This is a really great addition to LightWave.
What are the differences/extras that make it a great addition. I would like to know as someone interested in the oppurtunity. But whome of you with experience can shed futher light on, why to add it to one's tool chest, other than the special price.
If some experienced detailed answers can be given would be appeciated.
More than just skin deep stuff...

Just try the demo first, it's fully functional. If you're too lazy to do that then go to the website and take a look at the feature set via the handy videos.
It's almost as if they anticipated your question. Imagine that, just for you!

Modo is cool. Unfortunately some things aren't supported in LW, like edge creases and ngon subd. So I found it not so fluid when you get to the stage where you need to render or integrate your model in an existing scene. If you made use of these cool features you need to go back to native LW and take a step back undoing a lot of the functionality and taking time to do it.

Ouch!.. Someone’s got a bitter and twisted persona......., I'll just leave that there.
Ever, heard of the concept of a 'Review'. Its where another gives a personal insight of something they have looked into for others benefits. Giving an opinion of something outside the bias of sales pitches. Giving the opportunity for someone to gauge what level of interest they may have before investing time(they may or may not have) to look deep into the product for themselves. It takes more than just an hour or two to get the full low down.
Why is it so many can say something like... "This is a really great addition to Lightwave."
or ..."this software is good, go get it" but when you ask for a deeper opinion of why they think it is so good, some jack ass gets up and says "Just try the demo first"
and then insults you by saying "If you're too lazy to do that then...."
Lazy has nothing to do with it. I happen to be in the middle of an online "Maya Fundamentals Course" offered by 3dBuzz (http://www.3dbuzz.com/), which only goes for 5 weeks, but has 70+ hours of video content, plus also the time I need to do the assignments.
So I just don’t have enough time to devote to it this second, and would just appreciate some insight into what other fellow artist have. Especially when the one who started this thread has a hell of a lot more experience than me, written many a book on Lightwave, knows Lightwave inside and out....and then says... "This is a really great addition to Lightwave."
....Well, I would just like to know why he and others like him think so.
P.S. for everyone else ....If you are into learning more about 3D programs in general...then I highly suggest you look into the online, VTM orientated, 3DBuzz "Maya Fundamentals Course". The amount of content is insane for the price. 70+ hours of content. Expertly tutored. And going way beyond what others call fundamentals. I am a Lightwave artist, but this course is giving me an insight to the ways, other 3d programs think and work. And giving me a great insight into 3d in general. What I am learning is also giving me further fuel for my Lightwave career.

Perhaps he was a bit harsh but I think he has a point, mainly: the advantages seem to vary from user to user. It's most likely a question best answered by oneself.
Here's a thread in the modo forum that might illuminate the LW experience with Modo.
http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=249032
I haven't had time to play with it. I just got it a few days ago. It's different enough from LW in interface to annoy me (have to relearn mouse moves for bevel, scale, etc.) It does not have nearly as many plugins for model creation (primitives, etc) as LW. It does crash fairly often. :)
But, it does edge tools, etc. The movies on the website can illustrate the differences better than I could describe them. I tried to reconstruct an object I made in LW7.5 and it was going much easier in Modo. Of course, it might have gone easier in LW8 too. I think all the tools provide instant feedback...like Smooth, etc. which can give you an edge vs. Modeler.
I think it could be deemed a good companion to LW because it helps where Modeler could be considered weak. It also enhances the value in Modeler in the fact that it can import/export your models so you can do what works best in Modeler and then finish/tweak in Modo. For some folks, Modo is all they need. For myself, I still appreciate what Modeler gives me too. Finally, I like that it runs well on Mac and Windows. I like that it can import/export different formats. As I get better, I can keep using Lightwave but will perhaps start modelling for Maya, etc without a new learning curve.
