I own XSI Foundation. The next level of investment would allow me to use the FX-Tree. Now... can I use that module instead of an external composit software (which I lack as well). I would like to integrate XSI models/animations into still pictures or video scenes.

XSI sales or support do not respond... sighhhhhhh How I LOVE/HATE this software 8-).

Thanks in advance for a brief idea

Yep, you can do it. I have limited experience with the FX-tree, but I've done simple compositing jobs in it, no problem. So, yes, you can integrate your 3D stuff with video and still images.

I don't know if you're a student, but you can get the whole wopping program (or so) for around $300 under their education deal, and it came with the learning dvd set too.

FXTree is great!

Although there are couple of things to concider:
*It is closed environment, that means no plugins, hopefully will arrive with next ver
*Has problems with float files(clips them while loading in)

I havent had time yet to test matte handling functonality/tracking etc. But other than that I love this little tool. Fix together quick comps for preview or make something more serious, in every level users like it. And best part of it is that it is deeply integrated with XSI.

In XSIbase there has been some indepth discussions about this very topic. I would advise to make a search there or here, sure something pops up.

no, it's not.
the FXTree has an SDK based on UFO since v3, which is both solid AND known, as it adopts a lot in terms of conventions and handling from the illusion and matador structures.
there are already a couple commercial plugins for it infact, one of them a very valid DOF plugin I believe.

we've used 8bit, log cineons, linear 16bit and a couple times floating, with it without incourring into problems.
if you did you could want to contact support with repro steps and material and report a bug.

I haven't done any matte work with it, but I can tell you that the tracking is scarily fast.

Thanks for your comments! I will upgrade. The added functionality of 'Essentials' is worth more than I would get while procuring external apps.

Does someone know if it would be advisable to wait a short period of time because of a pending release? Dang, I don't even know how 'old' 4.2 is....

Thanks again!

PS:Heck yeahhhh, I'd make a little dance if I could afford the entire MONSTER PACK.... XSI rules!

You must have not done anything with the floating images then, when you load them in you can see the full range but as soon as you apply for example a colorcorrect node it clips the values, same with the blur and other filers I think. The blur works with the full range, but the output will always be cliped..

I tried to upgrade today. But all I got out of SoftImage is a proposal for 1500$ plus a 700 something maintenance contract. I don't think I need maintenance. And I can't afford the extra money for that anyways.

Does anyone here have an idea if that maintenance contract is really necessary? Maybe I can buy it next month then.... GRRRRRRR when I bought foundation they told me it's 1500 flat for the upgrade.

SoftImage is so difficult to deal with 8-(

the MNT contract is not strictly necessary, but it gives one year of direct channel with support, EVERY release (major or minor) during that year, and if needs be access to engineering fixes for a killer showstopper if you ever bump into one.

it's well worth it, especially since the next version is bound to come out before the end of the year (maybe even in this same quarter) and the version upgrade would cost you more without granting the support channel for 12 months.

Hi Raff,

" I haven't done any matte work with it, but I can tell you that the tracking is scarily fast."

That's cos it crashes xsi. ;) I found a great bug a while ago. Add a tracking node and try to resize it's area. BAM! Where did my xsi go?!?

Your right though when it does behave it's very fast.

Si

I bought Essentials just so I could have a dongle to move around to multiple computers (desktop/laptop). Maintenance provided the 4.2 update for free which add the fx-tree to Essentials.. SWEET!

It's too bad that XSI couldn't use Electric Gaskit (or whatever it's called) from Avid, adding the ability to use After Effects Plugins..

Thanks again for your comments. Specially The_Jaco. I will buy the full package. I guess the sales guy 'insisted' for the reasons mentioned.... There might be something new right around the corner and I probably would have hung myself when I would have to upgrade for the full price.....

Thanks again!
