Funny you mentioned compressor. :) We were talking about them in my AE class last night. Sorenson is suppositly the best, a happy 'medium' and I believe widely used. Also Dvix (sp?) is up there as well. The instructor also mentioned 'animation' and 'cinepak'.

Hope that helps.

I hope you are rendering RLE files sequences and compressing in post. I like MJPEG B in quicktime and avoid AVI unless uncompressed for DVD authoring etc.

I'd rather render RPF files myself, aren't those better?

My understanding is that the only major difference between RPF and RLE is the amount of frame info saved. RPF retains more internal settings than RLE, and I think that's it. (Both are uncompressed)

I guess at that point it would depend on what info you'd need saved in the file. (I love when RPFs get to 20mb per frame. Combustion has fun with that.)

What does RLE and RPF stand for? I'm sure I know what they are, just that it escapes me at the moment.

Thx. XenaTrek.

RLE = Run Length Encoded, a form of lossless compression found in the TGA file format for example.

RPF is a great format if you need flexibility in post, like pseudo depth of field and fog, or even extraction of the camera for 3D post AND you have a tool like combustion or AE that can utilize the embeded data.

I think some were confusing RLE with the older extended data format RLA.

D'oh! LS, you are correct. Shows that I really need more than 6 cups of coffee to get moving in the morning.

Xvid Mpeg4 is nice for web , lossless and neat.
RLE is nice if you have space and are keeping a library of clips . But xvid is smallest. And wmv format is smaller but lossy.

We were told to avoid mp's unless we have not choice due as it tends to distort the output. Tho probably good for the web.
