Thanks....

Before I settle this thread, let me share something with you.

Keep in mind that I haven't work with Max on XP the way I'm using it now. I've learned much more and I'm using more tools in Max.

I've used both XP and 2000 and have experienced a faster machine with XP. Though this may be true, I'm well aware that there can be items in the background that I may not know about that would come into play when considering Max and performance. There seems to be an overwhelming choice of 2000 over XP for reasons that haven't applied to me; such as compatibility, stability, and minor issues that I will not bother to say. My hardware was all manufactured at least 1 year since XP's debut, perhaps this is one reason as to why stability issues don't apply to me? As for speed....XP has certainly moved a lot faster than 2000 for me, especially with media. Everything also seems to look more crisp with the new Clear Type feature XP offers.

The apps run faster, plus, I've never had a problem with crashes....ever. Once I get in the heart of XP and make many changes that Microsoft has added which most (including myself) find unnecessary....XP seems to soar.

However, Max is a tool I'm not familiar with when it comes to what a 3D application needs out of an OS. XP is supposed to make the world of 3D easier and clearer for users. Yes, it uses more memory and resources...my question is, does that not show the signs of an OS that wants to think and perform more efficiently?

The thread you provide me has a member saying XP is only good for internet users...? I will agree that it is very user friendly and has the best GUI setup that Microsoft has to offer...but, XP has noticeable improvements that the advance user can take advantage of.

If you plan on running XP on old hardware and or anything prior to its conception....yes, expect to have problems. This is what seems to be the core of all these issues.

Aside from Bill Gates wanting to change the world of PC and exploit your privacy (a default XP installation always wants to call home for any reason) I think they do good for the PC experience.

Also, am I the only one wondering when Max can be ported to Linux?

I just read that you can run XSI on Linux....that has to be sweet.

I, too, like XP over 2k.

Many people does indeed still suggest 2k as the only OS for MAX. But I think the most important factor in many peoples decision in going with 2k, is simply that it's a proven platform for MAX. Like NT4 before it, there was a period where 2k wasn't regarded as "safe" for MAX users. And that seems fair enough to me, not everyone wants to take even the slightest risk when choosing OS, and by all means, 2k is still more proven than XP.

Of course companies have a whole host of additional considerations, not only is the cost greatly increased as they require mass-licensing, but there's there IT department being tied up upgrading, new weird small problems arising on account of the new UI and various features in XP, a whole slew of new questions from the users, etc.

I haven't had trouble using XP though, it runs just as stable as 2k did, and a fair bit more efficiently. I haven't read the thread you were given, but saying XP is just for internet users sounds like a comment not quite grounded in reality. With that said I don't mean an upgrade is a neccessity as such, if 2k works one might as well continue with that for the next few years. Personally I only upgraded at the time because I wanted to format and clean out my system anyway. I'm talking about XP Pro here btw, I decided against the Home edition after hearing about all that stuff with the having-to-register and whatnot.

On the Linux matter, please, join the club ("open bar over there, the swimmingpool is in the back, hot single people of your choice of gender in that shed over there, and every Thursday is toga-party night") we are a great many people wishing to see MAX for other platforms. Tricky, though, because MAX is quite deeply entrenched in the Windows platform. Can't even be run through WINE on Linux as it currently stands.

XP pro requires activation as well. Unless you buy an open license or another type of license thet gives you a volume license key.

Most pirate copies use VLK as well.
