Is there a way to make manipulators visible only when an object they affect is selected?

Like, right now I learn how to rig a character and there's a bunch of custom attributes that go to the command panel. It would be nice to have manipulators instead but they would be too many of them. I would like to be able to only see the manipulators affecting the selected controller object.

Right. Bobo has that Spooky Hide script that does just that.

On a similar note, just to promote my idea, could anyone give me some clues/links on how to create custom manipulators? In max it's just a slider and 2 angle thingies.

There's gotta be a way to create rigs similar to Ice Age rigs in Maya. No reason max can't do it. Can't find any links when I need them. Anyone has links to their rigs? Like things representing eyelids and stuff.

Also is there a way to anchor manipulators to objects? So they are in the general viscinity of the object rather than where you originally put them onscreen?
