View Full Version : Random max5 exiting bug.

Max5 sometimes closes and removes itself from memory with no warning or disk activity. I have tried to track down what the cause is, but the radom exiting doesn't happen consistently. I also had the same problem under Max4 and different Windows versions. It is clearly not predicted by Max, as it doesn't offer it's usual "Do you want to save a rescue file cos I'm about to crash?" dialog. Has anyone else experienced this problem, or aware of any possible causes?

My Spec: 1Ghz Athlon, 384Mb RAM, XP Pro (same problem under 98SE), Geforce 2.

-Martin.

Not sure what causes it but I've had that happen a couple times when I was running 3.1. I haven't had it happen in a while tho.

i had the same thing happen to me. Max would just turn off, corrupting the file. I later figured out it was a faulty stick of ram. I only mention it because you said it happened to other versions of max and different op systems. I really don't know all that much about hardware or if it's a possibilty in your case, i just wanted to mention it.

hahahaa

Just so you guys know... this isn't just Max. Maya, XSI, LW all do this on occasion also.

I guess I've been lucky with MAX5. It's only done that once or twice. (Autobackup RULES)

I've been playing around with XSI though, and it would do a sudden exits 2-3 times in as many hours. weird

I have the same problem in max5 which seriously delay my job...

until now I can't use max5 because it always shut down the
system.

I have no idea to do with the problem:surprised

ok, you have a hardware problem. If it was max, mine and Tao's would be doing that also.

Rock solid I tell you. Like a rock.

This has happened in every version of max since V2 from memory. Generally, this is a graphics card settings problem. If you get your card set right, it'll only happen once every few months instead of many times a day.

some specific things to try:

1) turn off any anti-virus software; many like NAV are known to cause the sudden shutdown problem

2) win 2k sp3 is known to have compability problems with max 5; win 2k sp 2 is the best OS to be running with max

3) turn off dual planes if you are running a ge force

4) try running in software mode to see if the problem goes away; if it does you have isolated it to a graphics related problem and can focus your troubleshooting

5) turn off all services in your OS that you are not using; some that could be having problems with max 5, tho its is unconfirmed, are the automatic update and the task scheduler, switch these to manual so they arent loading on startup

6) unconfirmed, but you can try turning off "show pop up windows ..." in winexplorer.

7) test your ram for errors (http://www.mushkin.com/support/)

8) check for heating problems with a mobo monitor
