Well,
I've been trying hard to make decent looking hair in maya, i have failed hard. Im going towards the look that you see in the FFX cinematics. Although most likely square uses a plugin for this? But it looks to me like texutred planes. Anyways, I tried thehobbitguy's mini tutorial and have failed miserably in the attempt. I really want to make hair look like how his did, with his technique the hair looks like crap on a white background but if its black behind the hair it looks semi decent. Nothing great though, with my attempts. Can someone shoot me a more indepth tutorial or something to make hair using texture mapped planes? The one at menithings isnt very indepth, nor is the one on lightwave's site in the tutorial section. My hair always looks like the first render he did on the tutorial. Ultra thing, and not like hair at all.

I used an anistrophic shader, with a white black ramp repeated with a tiny bit of noise. Reveresed for the specular color. And a color ramp or texture map. It looks horrid, nothing like hair. Whats the secret :)

If anyone can help please let me know. Paintfx looks like crap too and yes ive follow that one tutorial for it, my hair never looks like his did even if you follow the tut step by step.

Square used Maya Fur for the short hair (Ryan, Sid) and used a custom plug-in to export curves to Renderman for hair rendering.

If you can't stretch to a plugin then just keep trying with the textured planes, or rather model a haircut and texture that. Hair looks best with many bits sliding over each other, and to get it realistic takes a lot of time, as with the texturing. It's really a matter of what you put in, you get out

Yes for long hair, it was geometry with shaders. only thing I wonder is how the freak they simulated all that geometry for the hair and not have the computers slow to a halt.

Then again I dont know alot about what they use.
