View Full Version : Granite texture using the Mabel shader
RobertC 06-13-2005, 03:51 PM Hi All
Has anyone had any experience trying to create a highly polished black (or indeed any colour) granite using the mabel shader?
I am trying, without a huge degree of success. I'd be grateful for any pointers!
Many thanks

couldn't you do this with a bitmap (supposing you have one) and some reflection? it doesnt' seem that difficult if you have a bitmap or are creative enough with procedurals...

Thanks J111
I do have some black granite as a reference, but getting a good shot of it as it is so reflective is not easy.
How would you use procedurals? My experience here is not extensive I am afraid.
Cheers

well first off you are going to have to go through all the different types of noise and find one that resembles what you want, then I would use colorizer to add color to that and boom you will have something at least resembling granite. you need colorized noise and then refelction + specular if you ask me.

Thanks again J111
I'll give that a try.

If you're interested in a non-procedural one, I just whipped this up:

I have been very happy using noise to make stones. If you choose the right ones, you won't have tiling problems. Maps are easy, there are hundreds available all over the web. I just like noise since I don't have to keep track of the map.

I got this with just some simple noise, and reflection. I think there was some fresnel in the reflcetion channel also.

yeah haha, don't try colorizer what was I think but yeah, simple noise plus reflection should do it well. Just remember, if you don't have a good environment you can't have a good looking reflective material :-P.

Some noise in the bump really helps, with contrast adjusted so there are only a few 'pits' like the white spots in that last posted image.

Thanks James, Eric and Ernest
James: It's a good bitmap, but I was hoping to avoid maps, cheers anyway.
Eric: Yours is just what I was after - don't suppose you can recall the settings?
Thanks again

Here you go. You may need to adjust the scale of the noise in the color/layer channel depending on your model size, and how big you want your speckles to be.
