View Full Version : Need a little help on Masks.
Nerian 06-13-2005, 02:02 PM I have a question , i want to remove a face from a background of a messy room. The normal masking tutorial from phong.com didn't really work , any help?

It's actually quite easy. Just make sure that the layer with the image is not locked, add a mask and with the mask active start painting on it with black where you want the background to be removed.
Add a layer underneath this layer with the new preferred background.

Couldn't you just use the clone brush? I tend to use it for removing people from photos, or am I getting what you require wrong?

That doesn't matter, what matters is the background. Some hair can be masked in a matter of seconds, depending on the background. Without seeing an example, it's difficult to advice you, since every situation asks for a different approach or should I say in your case, different tutorials showing different methods.
Just paint it in the mask, use different opacity values, you can't have more control then that.

You may have better luck using the extract tool, rather then masks. It works very well with complex things that need to be removed from their background. It's under filter -> Extract... It's too long to explain how to use it here, but look it up in help or on the web. Here's a starter tut:

It should be exactly the tool you need. Good luck! :)
Go in qiuckmask mode and paint over the pixels you want, it's the finest control you can have, extract, magic wand enz enz can get you off with a good start, but fine detail has to be done through painting it, pixel by pixel if needed.
