View Full Version : I'm back! (and need help!)
neilyb 10-17-2002, 06:38 PM Hi all, it's bin a while. Looks like v8 is sweeping the board right now, so I shall pull you all back to earth. Hope you can help me.
As part of my animation brief at college I have to produce animation involving a cube and a sphere (or a multiple of). I have no idea how best to animate in Cinema (never really done it) and would like to know any links to tutorials involving bones/ IK/ deformations. ...etc. The brief basically want us to give said objects a bit of character, make them bounce...etc. I have my story ideas, just need the technical know how.....lol:(

AS say? Well thats hard to say as R8 is fully skinable so you can make it as sexy as you want ;)
For the cube I would use a bend deformer to make it easier but if you think your up for the challenge the best way to animate both is to use a freeform deformer. Keep it to simple swuach and stracth principles. here is a perfect example of good character animation using simple spheres. This was done by cameron miyasaki who recently interned at sony Pictures and then Pixar, he is now fultime at pixar working on Finding Nemo and an extremely talented animator.

Probably the best place to start would be the flying logo tutorial in the tutorial manual. That'll give you the basic low-down on the Timeline and animating movement/rotation. Then I'd read the manual on bones/IK and just start playing with it. Be sure to check out the "riggin the friggin face" thread below. Here's another tutorial along the same lines:

AdamT: thanks for the link, it has given me some clues!
I have another question too, which I may post in the main forum. I am looking for examples of digital art...on the net or otherwise, Anyone know any good gallerys\links (yep, another college project!)
Good to be back...even if it is on an analogue modem!

Arghhh version 8....I wish....now I'm a poor student I have no chance, specially as the edu license isn't out till next year....:annoyed:
Thanks for the links everyone, I shall check them all out. Yes, I have to animate my self, but unfortunately the tutor is a Maya/Max freak and doesn't know how to use the college software......!!!!!!!!! I have personally helped more students than he has....so I am having to do the char anim bit on my own, god help the students who aren't sure how to open Cinema, let alone animate in it!
I love you all.....and glad to be back, even if it is on a 56K modem.......d'oh!

Maya/Max freak huh.....isn't there a famous saying about tutors/teachers.....that really upsets the old maya/max users...goes something like "those who can't teach"!....heh heh...just kiddin'....love you all really:wavey:
So let me get this right bud,You have paid to be taught C4D in a college environment by someone who is a tutor who does not know how to use C4D:thumbsdow.....If you start doing quite a bit of helping bud I would be looking for reduced fees of some kind :)

Well 3D animation is only part of the course, director, PS, AE, illustrator, quark, flash.....get the picture. The guy is supposed to teach us animation rather than Cinema, but it helps to know the package you have to use eh? I feel more sorry for the students who have just learned o turn on a Mac......!
